Madame X Tour

Reactions from the opening night of the Madame X Tour

Review: Madonna kicks off tour with intimate BAM concert

Madonna was like a virgin - shiny and new all over again.

In the first full concert of her sixth decade, the 61-year-old Queen of Pop ventured into unknown terrain, launching her “Madame X” theater tour at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House on Tuesday night. In a 37-year career playing arenas and stadiums, after rising up from the downtown New York club scene, she was still reinventing herself.

This - the first of her 17-night stand at BAM ending Oct. 12 - was indeed uncharted territory for a woman who has done it all. Playing in such an intimate space after all these years, though, the pop diva of all pop divas was adamant about you not sharing videos and pics of her so up close and personal.

Her no-cellphone policy required you to put your device in a pouch that wouldn’t allow you access to it until after the show or at designated phone stations outside of the theater.

The Material Mom of six has gone from “Papa Don’t Preach” to “Mama Don’t Play.” She can still out-diva any opera diva on the planet.

But as fans lined up around Fort Greene’s Ashland Place to get to the opera house entrance on Lafayette Street - no doubt slowed by having to put their phones in those YONDR pouches - it was the kind of New York scene befitting a New York icon. When it was announced that she wouldn’t even go on until 10:30 p.m. - despite the 8:30 start time on the ticket - fans didn’t even blink an eye.

They knew the drill: You wait until Madonna is ready.

When she finally took the stage around 10:45 p.m. to sing “God Control,” her anti-gun anthem from her “Madame X” album, some of her old fans who had been napping on their partners’ shoulders needed to heed the song’s call to “wake up” in a very literal sense.

But just as Madonna wanted to keep it old-school with her no-cellphone policy - which was refreshing and relatively painless - the night was also a concession to the fact that she is, well, older now.

That could be felt in her most throwback moment, when she took a Polaroid selfie of herself and sold it to old pal Rosie O’Donnell - her costar in 1992’s “A League of Their Own” - for a thousand dollars.

But it could also be measured in the fact that this theater tour is not just a creative curve in a career where every move has been calculated, but it’s a reimagining of herself as an artist at a time when she can no longer do the choreography-heavy work that arenas and stadiums would demand of her.

Let’s be real: There’s only so far Madonna had to walk from one side of the stage to the other at BAM.

As shrewd of an agent as Madame X - the spy alter ego she adopted for her latest album - is, she had her dancers do the heavy lifting for her. Instead, she emphasized the performance art that has always been a part of her concerts at the expense of the moves that she honed when dance teacher Martha Graham first coined her “Madame X.”

The setting and the sensibility turned up the theatrics of “Madame X” songs such as “Dark Ballet,” which, with its nod to Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” came to life in a way that made it dig into your soul more than the recording could. And make no mistake, this is a “Madame X” show. A good 80-85 percent of the two-hour-plus show is dedicated to her new album.

That won’t make this tour the go-to show for the casual Madonna fan, but diehards hardly seemed to mind that she only gave you bits of faves such as “Express Yourself” and “La Isla Bonita” while concentrating on “Madame X” tracks such as “Medellín,” “Crazy” and “Come Alive” - the latter of which did just that with a gospel flourish that set the stage for “Like a Prayer” later.

“Like a Prayer” and “Vogue” were the only two straight-up Madonna classics that she really performed in full. But the highlight was another Madge hit, 1997’s “Frozen,” that she did as her oldest child, 22-year-old daughter Lourdes, did the dancing on video projections to keep it in the family groove.

Madonna And Too Faced Are Teaming Up On A Make-Up Collection

Brace yourselves people, Madonna, who’s been dictating make-up trends since the 80s when she graced our screens in the ‘Like A Virgin’ music video, is finally getting her very own make-up collection.

The music icon already has her own skincare line MDNA SKIN, which would set you back £302 for a face cream, but thankfully these products are slightly more affordable.

Teaming up with Too Faced, the brand famous for their Better Than Sex Mascara, the collection includes two make-up box sets, both inspired by Madonna’s stage looks from her hotly anticipated Madame X Tour.

The idea? To give fans their own piece of Madonna to take home and achieve the exact make-up looks Madge wears on stage. Anything that gets us a little bit closer to being Madonna is all good in our books.

Kit number 1, named ‘Medellin Set’, consists of a ruby red shade of Too Faced’s Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick, a five part palette with four eyeshadows ranging from matte peaches to red shimmers and a baby pink blush. The set also includes the brand's Damn Girl! Mascara and Better Than Sex Liquid Liner.

Kit 2, named 'I Rise’ repeats the format but in soft dusty pink and rose gold shades.

Don't even get us started on the packaging. Needless to say, it's also pretty major, featuring the Madame X Tour logo with promo images of the queen herself. Make-up with Madonna on the front? We’re sold.

Whilst the exact prices haven’t been released yet we don’t expect it to come close to her skincare line. With average Too Faced prices ranging from £30-£40 for a decent-sized eyeshadow palette, we hope the Madonna collaboration will be along the same lines.

The collab officially drops tomorrow at the Madame X pop up shop in New York but lucky fans can also get their hands on it at the concert dates. Can all gigs have make-up merchandise from now on? Thanks.

Madonna slams ‘misogynistic’ haters following raunchy previews of Madame X tour

Madonna refuses to take hate from anyone, including those who made negative comments after she posted a provocative video on Instagram. The pop queen, who recently launched her Madame X radio station on SiriusXM, was having none of it when haters flooded into the comments of a video she posted showing her preparing for her upcoming tour.

In the video, a rehearsal for her Madame X tour, Madonna is writhing around on the floor in a huge tube wearing her new eye-patch look. And not everyone took well to it. The Like A Virgin singer had been sharing sneak peeks of her tour on Instagram but is not pleased with the backlash she has received. So she decided to take to social media to sort it out and did not hold back. ‘Madame X is a history professor,’ she wrote in an Instagram caption. ‘PS. IG police other wise known as women-hating misogynistic bigots can F**k off!!!!!

‘Your fear of what I represent is palpable and the fact that you follow me and take the time to make remarks is an advertisement for your stupidity – ignorance and intolerance for that which is different. ‘If I am not relevant then prove it. Stop following me. Lol.'

The Like A Virgin star didn’t let trolls get her down as her very next Instagram post showed a snippet of her sexy dancing with the caption: ‘We brush off b*****s… trying to steal our light…they did not earn…🐍🐍🐍🐍 #madamex #rehearsals. #paybackisab***h’ And the Material Girl singer has also posted some tongue-in-cheek footage of her getting ready for a rehearsal where she’s combing her locks. Putting on a forced British accent, the star explains she’s combing her ‘naturally wavy’ hair and asks ‘do I look like Rita Hayworth or Greta Garbo?’ referring to the famous Hollywood actresses in the thirties and forties.

Madonna's 17 Madame X Shows In New York Are More Than 90% Sold Out, So Everybody Chill

Following on from several news reports saying Madonna was not selling tickets to her shows, Live Nation's Arthur Fogel has put the record straight in this interview with Billboard:

Want to see Madonna's Madame X show in New York? No problem. As of yesterday there were about 3,000 tickets available to one of her 17 shows at Brooklyn's Howard Gilman Opera House. Same for her shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Miami - fans can still buy tickets directly from the 'Medellin' singer through Ticketmaster for all 48 shows on her intimate Madame X theater tour stops in the U.S.

That's normal. A lack of sellouts for what some would consider a once-in-a-lifetime experience doesn't mean that's Madonna's tour is 'tarnished' as the New York Post claimed yesterday. Similar things were said about Taylor Swift's Reputation tour, which went on to be highest grossing U.S. tour of 2018, as well as Jay-Z, whose 4:44 tour was the highest grossing of his career.

The truth about Madonna's ticket sales are more complicated than a Page Six headline and foreshadow changes to the way tickets are priced and sold that will ultimately reshape how the music industry views success in touring.

In Madonna's case, on Monday, Live Nation released about 3,000 unsold tickets to the public. Madonna sold 31,000 tickets during the presale for her 17 New York shows and the tickets left over represent 8.8% of available ticketing inventory for the New York run. With exactly three months to go until the first show on Sept. 12, there's little doubt the iconic artist will sell the remaining tickets says Arthur Fogel, chairman of global music and president of global touring at Live Nation, which is promoting the tour.

So why is the media piling on like Madonna has been cancelled if she has sold more than 90% of her tickets for the New York shows?

'In life, the only guarantees are death, taxes and the New York Post take-down piece on Madonna,' jokes Fogel, who has battled the tabloid over its negative coverage of her tours going back to 2008's Sticky and Sweet Tour. (That tour was described as a flop by the Post and to this day holds the record for highest-grossing tour by a female artist with $408 million in ticket sales.)

'We started with seven shows' for Madonna in Brooklyn, Fogel says, 'then added five more to get to 12 shows then added another five to get to 17. I'm adding shows because it's a flop? Is that some kind of new business model that I'm not familiar with?'

In fairness, Madonna's tickets prices are part of an even evolution in how concerts are priced, although the Queen of Pop has always charged more for tickets than her contemporaries. For decades, an artist's ability to quickly sell out shows has been the barometer of success, although as the secondary market matured, artists are increasingly realizing that it usually wasn't fans that created instant sellouts. It was brokers. And in recent years it's also been bots buying up tickets they think are underpriced and then relisting them on sites like StubHub and Viagogo for double and triple face value.

The concert business has been watching and, seeing how much money is being made on the secondary market, has increasingly shifted to more aggressive pricing strategies to earn more money for artists while also making it difficult for scalpers to resale tickets for a profit.

For Madonna, that meant charging $1,650 plus fees to sit in the front row, $1,350–$700 to sit in the front orchestra section, $550 per ticket to sit in the mezzannine section and $359 to sit in the rear balcony. Many of her longtime fans were not happy with the pricing, but 'if she were to put them on sale at half the price, they would immediately be bought up by brokers and listed on StubHub,' says Patrick Ryan with Eventellect, a ticket pricing and distribution company.

Instead the tickets are priced at what end consumers are willing to pay and sell slower than in the past with more lead time out to move the pricier platinum tickets and VIP packages. While the shows might not technically sell out, Madonna is going to make far more money than anyone else playing venues that size and will likely walk away with one of the highest grossest theater tours in history.

Fogel says more than 100,000 people registered for Madonna's Verified Fan presale for the Brooklyn shows. Ticketmaster then 'scrubs those accounts and kicks out known scalpers and people using multiple credit cards to buys tickets,' he says.

Live Nation allows the remaining presale registrants their crack at buying tickets and 'at the end of the process, there's some tickets left,' he adds. 'And those tickets were put on sale yesterday because the registrants we're all satisfied. So out of 17 shows, 34,000 tickets available, there's a few thousand tickets left. So fucking what?'

Live Nation’s Arthur Fogel Breaks Down Madonna’s ‘Madame X’ Tour

As this issue was going to press, Madonna had just announced dates for her upcoming 'Madame X' Tour in support of her upcoming 14th studio album of the same name. And, as luck would have it, Arthur Fogel, the man overseeing Madge’s tours for the past 18 years, also happens to be Live Nation’s esteemed president of global touring and chairman of global music. Here, he discusses what to expect for the global superstar’s first jaunt since 2015-2016’s Rebel Heart Tour and her serious underplays.

How many tours have you done with Madonna?
This will be my sixth. I started with her in 2001. Prior to that, she had toured, I think twice in 15 years? So, this is the sixth in whatever 18 years. She’s Madonna, right? This particular tour is a bit of a twist because she’s going to play multiple nights in smaller venues. It is not an arena tour or stadium tour.

What kinds of places will she play?
For instance, in New York, we’re playing Brooklyn Academy of Music. Basically, we’re going to do eight or nine cities over the course of the tour. Really, it comes from this album, it’s just a different kind of vibe. It lends itself more to intimacy. As we talked about it, it seemed to make sense to go this route rather than into bigger buildings. That’s what we’re going to do.

Is she doing multiple nights at each spot?
Yes. We’re playing three cities in Europe - London, Paris, and Lisbon. That’s it over there, and here, we’re doing LA [The Wiltern], New York [BAM], Chicago [The Chicago Theater], Miami [Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre], Vegas [Caesars Palace], Boston [the Boch Center Wang Theatre], Philly [The Met Philadelphia]. Multiple nights in each of those cities.

If she’s doing BAM I’m guessing it’s going to be fairly theatrical?
Listen, Madonna’s shows always have that dimension to them, but I would say it’s much more about the musical tone and vibe than it is pure theatrics. Maybe you’ve heard the first single? It’s definitely sort of Spanish influenced, world music-y, as much as a pop record.

Madonna doing BAM and the Wiltern and all these smaller theaters sounds like another innovative approach and iteration of the business. I would never have expected to see Madonna play those places in a million years.
I think it’s important, over a touring career, to change things up. It’s a part of what excites fans, keeps artists energized. I mean if you go out and do the same thing every tour, eventually that catches up to you. I think it’s great when people change it up, do different things, certainly, as it relates to creating music. There used to be a lot more tolerance for people changing things up and trying different things. I think doing that live is really important to longevity as well.

What do you do as her promoter now when you’ve announced the tour? What does that mean for your year ahead?
I would say most of the heavy lifting is done. We’ve been working on it for several months. Obviously, putting together the routing and the venues and putting all the pieces together on the marketing side, and the onsale. With Madonna, U2, my longtime clients, Gaga, I’m also the producer, so there’s both sides of the equation, right? There’s this kind of traditional promoter side, but there’s also the producer, production side. So, there’s a lot of pieces to put together, which we’ve been doing over the last several months. By the time this is announced, things will be in place. We’ll go on sale, and then it’s just sort of waiting to start in September.
