Madonna, Bjork and Star Wars feature in kimono exhibition

Madonna, Bjork and Star Wars will all feature in a new exhibition on the kimono.

The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) is planning its first major exhibition on the 'ultimate symbol of Japan' and a 'constantly evolving icon of fashion'.

Highlights will include the Alexander McQueen dress worn by Bjork on her Homogenic album cover.

It will also feature original Star Wars costumes modelled on the kimono, and the Jean Paul Gaultier ensemble which Madonna wore for her Nothing Really Matters video.

The Star Wars costume, a light brown robe of threadbare cloth, was worn by Sir Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

More than 315 works will be featured in the exhibition, including kimonos especially made for the show.

Curators said Japan itself is enjoying a resurgence of interest in the garment.

Anna Jackson said: 'From the sophisticated culture of 17th century Kyoto to the creativity of the contemporary catwalk, the kimono is unique in its aesthetic importance and cultural impact, giving it a fascinating place within the story of fashion.'

Rare 17th and 18th century kimonos will be displayed for the first time in the UK, alongside work by a new wave of contemporary designers and stylists.

Paintings, prints, film, dress accessories and other objects will also feature, as well as Oscar-winning costumes from the film Memoirs Of A Geisha.

Kimono: Kyoto To Catwalk runs at the V&A in London from February 29 to June 21 next year.

Madonna capped off WorldPride with powerful message during concert at 'Pride Island'

All it took was a 30-minute concert for Madonna to deliver her powerful sentiments in support of the LGBTQ community during her performance to close out WorldPride.

Thousands of people flocked to Pier 97 in New York City, also known as 'Pride Island,' to see the icon put on her four-song set. The concert ended a month of festivities for WorldPride, including the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots on June 28 that sparked the gay liberation movement.

'Fifty years of revolution,' Madonna said to the crowd between songs. 'Fifty years of freedom and fighting. Fifty years of putting up with discrimination, hatred and ignorance. Fifty years of not bowing down to fear. I’m so proud and honored to share this historical event with you. Fifty [expletive] years. It’s insane. Are you with me?'

The singer went on to give background as to why she shares a special bond with the LGBTQ community.

'Since I came to New York as a wee-little girl, I have always been embraced by queer nation,' Madonna continued. 'I always felt like an outsider, but you made me feel like an insider, like somebody. So you must know how much I love and appreciate everyone here from the LGBTQ community.'

Madonna opened the show with her smash hit 'Vogue,' followed by a guitar-led rendition of 'American Life' before showing off the singer's new material in the second half of her act.

Before performing her new songs 'God Control' and 'I Rise,' the singer spoke candidly with the crowd about the biggest issues facing America.

She listed gun safety as a major issue: 'Gun safety and gun control which is disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.'

Her performance of 'God Control' featured her background dancers dressed as police officers, while 'I Rise' showcased images of the young students who were at the forefront of the March for Our Lives movement.

Many fans and supporters of the LGBTQ community attended the packed celebration. Comedian Billy Eichner, 'Pose' star Billy Porter and Frankie Grande, brother of singer Ariana, made appearances.

Madonna arrives at the Met Gala

Madonna wowed the crowds at the Met Gala 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination' last night in a black dress by Jean Paul Gaultier.

The bespoke design featured a black mesh cross on the bodice as well as oversized sleeves and a full skirt. Madonna accessorised with some Miu Miu boots, a net veil and a custom made crown by Rinaldy Yunardi.

Madonna Sings 'Like a Prayer' in Surprise 2018 Met Gala Performance

Madonna loves to court controversy within the Catholic Church.

The 59-year-old entertainer gave a surprise performance Monday in honor of the 2018 Met Gala exhibit, 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.' After walking the red carpet in black Jean Paul Gaultier gown and veil, she joined the other guests inside for dinner.

Later, Madonna changed into a monastic cloak and appeared at the top of the stairs of the Great Hall. With church bells tolling, she opened her set with 'Like a Prayer' (the song that outraged Church leaders in the '80s), then segued into a cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah.'

Jimmy Fallon, Kim Kardashian and more celebrities shared snippets of the performance on Instagram, while Donatella Versace, one of the gala's co-chairs, live-streamed it in its entirety.

Madonna, who was raised Roman Catholic and later became a devotee of Kabbalah, has often claimed in interviews she's been excommunicated from the Church. 'No matter what spiritual path I might go down, I always feel some kind of inexplicable connection with Catholicism,' she told Rolling Stone in late 2015. 'It kind of shows up in all of my work, as you may have noticed.'

Madonna Gives Surprise Performance at Leonardo DiCaprio's Event

Madonna made a surprise appearance at The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation's annual fundraising gala on Wednesday night in St. Tropez. France.

She performed a four-song set of 4 Minutes, Ray Of Light, La Isla Bonita and Open Your Heart.

Other A-lists guests at the gala included Madonna's ex, Sean Penn, as well as Jared Leto, Cate Blanchett, Kate Hudson, Tom Hanks, Marion Cotillard, Uma Thurman and Edward Norton.

Madonna Explains Her Met Gala Dress, Reveals She Has Rosé in Her Canteen

Madonna's got a little extra help to get her through the Met Gala.

ET's Carly Steel caught up with the 58-year-old singer on the red carpet ahead of the event in New York City on Monday, where she revealed that her army-inspired look came with a canteen of rosé.

'I am of legal age. I know I look young,' Madonna joked, before explaining the thought process behind her unique ensemble.

'We knew we wanted to go with camouflage from the very start. We started with the flak jacket, and then we worked our way down inside,' she said of her Moschino look. 'So, you know, we're ready. We're ready to go to fashion war.'

'Combat Barbie,' designer Jeremy Scott added.

Wasn't just a collaboration between Madonna and Scott - her newly adopted daughters, Stelle and Estere, gave their mom the OK.

'They're great. They also approve of my outfit,' the mother of six revealed. 'It's very important.'

With the kids at home, however, Madonna and her canteen are ready to party.

'It's going to be a fun night,' she shared. 'As long as I drink the rest of my canteen.'

The night before the presidential inauguration (January 19), Madonna and artist Marilyn Minter will hold a discussion at Brooklyn Museum’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium.

The official rundown:
On the eve of the presidential inauguration, join Madonna and Marilyn Minter—two fearless feminist provocateurs—as they talk art, culture, feminism, and the current state of affairs. Connecting Madonna, an artist, activist, and philanthropist, with Minter, whose work explores cultural perceptions of women, this unprecedented conversation will highlight the impact of female artists within broader culture and social change. Moderated by poet, essayist, and playwright Elizabeth Alexander and by Anne Pasternak, Shelby White and Leon Levy Director of the Museum.

This historic program is part of our A Year of Yes: Reimagining Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum, a yearlong series of exhibitions and programs celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Museum’s Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.

Tickets for that talk go are currently on sale to members of Brooklyn Museum and will go on sale to the general public Friday 13 January at 4 PM.

Madonna to play surprise acoustic gig for Hillary Clinton

Madonna has announced she will be playing a last-minute acoustic gig next week in support of Hillary Clinton.

The surprise show will take place in New York City this Monday (November 7), on the eve of the election.

'Bitches Are You In My Gang???' the singer wrote an Instagram post. 'Doing a surprise intimate very small acoustic concert Monday night in support of Hillary. Stay tuned!'

She has yet to announce the gig’s venue or a stage time for her performance.

Madonna endorsed Clinton earlier in the Presidential campaign and showed her support for the Democrat when she introduced Amy Schumer at her recent NYC stand-up gig.

She previously followed Katy Perry’s lead by posting a nude photo on social media to show her support for Clinton.

'Living For Hilary!,' she wrote. 'Yes I vote for intelligence. I vote for equal rights for women and all minorities.'

'She’s the Best we got!' Madonna added. The Presidential election takes place on Tuesday (November 8).

The night will be held at the newly refurbished Eagle, south London’s premier polysexual bar and club, which now boasts an extraordinary Funktion-One sound system which will play the entire Sticky and Sweet tour.

'You’ll never have heard sound like it,' says Hoffman. 'But it’s not just about the acoustics – with a Madge-inspired set designed by Adrian Britnell, who has worked on such blockbusters as Moulin Rouge and Star Wars, we’re also in for real visual treat.'

Seven vast video screens, a ‘Candy Shop’, VIP area, Vogue ‘runway’, art installation, secret garden and a multi-mirror balled dance floor will be inviting you to get into the groove.

Hoffman knows his Madonna and started the event in 2007 after seeing her ground-breaking Confession’s Tour.

'Back then it was just a bit of fun,' he says. 'We’ve now been on an amazing journey and worked with some of the best acts and DJs going.'

Topping the bill this year will be Melissa Totten, a highly-respected Madonna impersonator, who will be treating revellers to key moments from the Sticky and Sweet tour.

'David Bowie and Prince are just two of the truly unique artists we’ve lost in 2016,' she muses. 'Madonna is one of our last icons, and even if she hung it all up today, she would have left a deep and lasting impact on pop culture. Music is not what it once was. Madonna floats high above the formulaic, canned pop you get on reality TV shows. There won’t be another like her, so we need to enjoy her now.'

Melissa will be joined by gay scene legends Mzz Kimberley and Seth Stomboli, along with the kind of super-human dancers you’ll see cavorting with Madonna in one of her legendary shows.

The night will also be raising money for local charity Wandsworth Oasis which supports local people living with HIV.

Madonna Admits It's 'Hard to Pee' In Her Met Gala Outfit

Madonna is going to do the 2016 Met Gala her way! As soon as the red carpet veteran arrived to tonight's star-studded event, fans couldn't help but admire the singer's outfit from the front.

From the knee-high boots, matching nail polish and jewelry headpiece, there were plenty of elements to oooh and ahhh over.

But as soon as she turned around, that's when people really started talking.

While wearing a black ensemble by Riccardo Tisci, Madonna couldn't help but show off her backside while posing for the camera.

If you thought the Grammy winner was afraid to walk in her revealing outfit, you don't know Madonna.

'No, I wasn't nervous,' the singer shared on Live! From the Red Carpet when looking back on her first Met Gala back in 1997. She did admit, however, that this year's look has made it 'hard to pee.'

With this year marking her sixth time at the fashionable event, what could the veteran be looking forward to this time around? 'The bread sticks,' she shared with E! News' Zuri Hall.
