'Human Nature' Saluting the Unapologetic Anthem That Should Have Been a Smash Hit

From 'Vogue' to 'Take a Bow' to 'Ray of Light,' Madonna scored some of her signature hits in the '90s. While most of her '80s pop compatriots struggled to stay on the radio, Madonna more-or-less maintained the same level of stardom throughout the decade, earning just two fewer Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits in the '90s than she did in the '80s.

But between Bedtime Stories and Evita, Madonna experienced her first real career dip. After several years of hypersexual imagery and songwriting (from the 'Justify My Love' video to the Sex book) and some family-unfriendly public appearances (her 1994 Letterman interview in particular), a portion of the American public was exhausted with her by 1995. Puritanical pop listeners might be OK with a heartfelt plea for keeping a baby, but leather and whips is just too much.

While she soon got back on track with a prestige motion picture (Evita) and an elegant ballad collection (Something to Remember), there was one unfortunate musical casualty of her brief lull: 'Human Nature.'

One of the few hip-hop-inflected singles in her discography (it samples a song from Main Source, the same rap group that gave Nas his first on-wax appearance), 'Human Nature' has a deeply funk foundation while maintaining the spacious, thin production common to many '90s R&B hits.

Madonna in Malawi visits hospital she has supported

Madonna in Malawi on Sunday visited the construction of a children's wing at a hospital that her charity is funding in this southern African country's largest city, Blantyre.

The pop star has been in Malawi for a week and is to meet President Peter Mutharika and health minister Peter Kumpalume. Madonna went to visit Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital to view the paediatric unit where construction started in May 2015 and which is expected to open in early 2017.

'This new facility is the first paediatric surgery and intensive care unit in any Malawi hospital. It will have an enormous impact on saving the lives of children,' said Madonna, in a statement to The Associated Press. 'In addition to raising the quality and availability of health care, we are also preparing for the future by training more Malawian medical staff in specialized paediatric care.'

Answering questions from the press, Madonna said that she does not yet have a name for the new children's wing.

'We don't have a name,' she said, 'but we have a building and we have dreams and they are going to be manifested very soon.'

Madonna is accompanied by her two children adopted from Malawi, David and Mercy, and her son Rocco. Madonna said she will continue to work to get the unit the staff and equipment needed.

'It's going to be my responsibility to make sure that this place has the equipment and is fully operational on a regular basis,' she said. 'So I have a big job ahead of me. Wish me luck.'

Asked if she has any more projects for Malawi, she said: 'I would like to do one thing really well than many things half-assed, as they say in America.'

The children's unit will include Malawi's first paediatric intensive care unit, three operating rooms dedicated to children's surgery, a day clinic and a 50-bed ward. It will enable Queen Elizabeth hospital to double the number of surgeries for children and will provide critical pre-operative and post-operative care.

Madonna takes adopted children on visit home to Malawi

Pop diva Madonna and her two adopted Malawian children have flown into the impoverished southern African nation to inspect a hospital project she is funding there, her charity Raising Malawi said Friday.

It is the first time in nearly two years that Madonna has visited the country, where she has at times been embroiled in controversy after her adoption of David Banda in 2006 and Mercy James in 2009.

She is reportedly the biggest individual donor to childrenโ€™s projects such as orphanages in Malawi, which is ranked by the UN Human Development Index as one of the world's 20 least developed countries.

Her latest project is a 50-bed surgical unit for children at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in the commercial capital Blantyre, complete with three operating theatres, a day clinic and the countryโ€™s first paediatric intensive care unit.

'The facility being funded by Madonna will greatly assist us because it will be particularly equipped for children's surgery,' paediatric specialist Eric Borgstein told AFP.

Borgstein, who is a partner in Raising Malawi and one of just three paediatric surgeons in the country, said the unit would double the hospital's capacity for surgery on children.

The current intensive care unit of the poorly-equipped hospital, which was built in 1958 and serves the 600,000 population in Blantyre, has just four beds.

Madonna, who has reportedly rented the entire upmarket Kumbali Country Lodge near the capital Lilongwe to ensure her privacy, will visit the project on Sunday. It is due to be completed by the end of the year.

Madonna moved to tears by case of child rape in Kenya

Pop star Madonna was reduced to tears during a trip to Kenya as she listened to a man describe how his five-year-old daughter had been recently raped by a neighbour in Nairobi's Kibera slum.

The U.S. singer met the man during a visit to Kibera, one of Africa's biggest slums, on Saturday and Sunday. She had gone there to see how she could improve the lives of its residents, a spokesman said.

'This was an incredibly powerful and disturbing conversation about the realities of violence in these people's lives,' said Trevor Neilson, who manages Madonna's Raising Malawi and Ray of Light foundations, and accompanied her on the trip. 'These stories brought Madonna to tears,' Neilson told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Madonna also met Kenya's First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on Monday to discuss working with her charity to scale up maternal and child health programs and initiatives against gender violence.

Kenyatta's charity Beyond Zero, which provides mobile clinics offering basic health services to Kenyans in remote areas, recently introduced safe spaces for victims to report gender based violence.

'Her (Madonna's) basic belief is that no child, no woman should be attacked anywhere. Period,' Neilson said. 'There needs to be a bright light shone on this problem, which creates an environment that enables the victims to come forward....and forces law enforcement to pursue these things.'

Constance Gakonyo, the First Lady's chief of staff, said the two women discussed ways of working together but they did not go into detail.

Madonna meets with Kenya's First Lady to promote female empowerment

Madonna celebrated Independence Day by promoting 'female empowerment' for women around the world.

The queen of pop is in Kenya, Africa, raising awareness for various causes, including the Beyond Zero campaign.

Margaret Kenyatta, the First Lady of Kenya, set up the initiative to help mothers and children overcome HIV-related issues and it's been so successful that in 2014 she was named UN Person of the Year.

Fellow philanthropist Madonna, who is a goodwill ambassador for Child Welfare in Malawi, as well as the founder of the charity Raising Malawi - which aims to prevent extreme poverty and hardship by Malawi's orphans - met Margaret recently, and shared a photo of the pair on Instagram as the U.S. celebrates its national holiday, Independence Day.

'Meeting with Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, the first lady of Kenya!' the 57-year-old pop star captioned the shot of them both. 'Learning about her Beyond Zero Campaign which targets eliminating maternal and child mortality in Kenya and hoping to join forces to promote Female Empowerment! Around the World! happy 4th!'

Over the weekend Madonna visited Africa's largest slum Kibera and spent time with its young dwellers.

Her trip was in aid of Shining Hope for Communities, a non-profit organisation aiming to provide girls in Kenyan slums with free education, health care, food and psychological services.

Meanwhile, the mother of four - who has children Lourdes, 19, and Rocco, 15, as well as her two adopted children Mercy and David, both 10, - has visited Kibera, Africa's biggest slum, during the trip to raise awareness of the poor living conditions in the country.

She also posted a picture of a litter-strewn river and wrote: 'Imagine this is where your water comes from! @shofco is working to change this in Kibera, Africa's largest slum.'
