Madonna Taps Singer Pia Mia For Material Girl

Madonna has named 'unique' singer Pia Mia as the new face of her fashion line, Material Girl.

The queen of pop launched her clothing brand with daughter Lourdes in mind in 2010, taking the name from her 1984 hit single. It's grown in popularity over the years, with big names like Kelly Osbourne, Rita Ora and Zendaya all modelling pieces for the label. Now Pia, who boasts musical collaborations with Chris Brown and will.i.am, is the latest star to be the face of the company, as well as its first-ever fashion director.

'Her creativity, confidence and unique sense of style make her a perfect addition to the brand,' Madonna told WWD of the 19-year-old singer.

Pia was discovered on YouTube when she was just 11 years old, and now has a deal with Interscope Records along with several acting roles to her name. Her edgy look, including regularly wearing bandannas in her hair and quirky jewellery, has landed her four million followers on Instagram and winning the job for Material Girl is the icing on the cake for Pia.

'The fact that Madonna chose me to do this literally makes me die,' she gushed while posing for her advertisements, set to break in July.

'We think Pia will bring her distinct perspective to the clothing as well as the overall voice of the brand,' Preeti Singh, senior director of marketing for the women’s division at licensing company Iconix Brand Group Inc., said. 'Lending both her fashion and social influence will not only bring fresh energy and elevate brand recognition, but as a vested ambassador for Material Girl, she has already proven her passion to see this partnership be a success.'

The collection is aimed at girls aged between 16 and 24, with pieces retailing from $20 (£14) to $70 (£48). There's everything from dresses, biker jackets and footwear available, all of which Pia is thrilled to wear in campaigns having rocked Material Girl herself since she was 13. The partnership is scheduled to last for 16 months, but there's apparently room for it to continue after this period.

Vogue on: Madonna's dancers take the limelight

In 1990, Madonna's Blond Ambition tour was one of the most controversial and talked-about events in entertainment history. The tour, which made more than £40m - a record at the time, also made stars out of her seven male backing dancers, who also featured in the 1991 film In Bed With Madonna. Now those dancers have their own documentary - Strike a Pose, directed by Dutch film-makers Ester Gould and Reijer Zwaan.

The tour featured Madonna's hit singles Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Like A Virgin and Vogue, and the singer, wearing her now iconic Jean-Paul Gaultier corset, drew complaints from religious groups for her provocative performances on stage, while shocking the society of 25 years ago by openly discussing HIV, Aids and homosexuality.

The film reunites six of the seven dancers - Carlton Wilborn, Salim Gauwloos, Oliver Crumes III, Luis Camacho, Jose Gutierez and Kevin Stea - while the seventh, Gabriel Trupin, who died of complications due to Aids in 1995, is represented by his mother, Sue Trupin.

Director Zwaan remembers being 11 years old when he saw In Bed With Madonna and said the dancers inspired him 'because they were out and proud - it taught me what was possible'.

'It was 1990, and it was the height of the Aids epidemic, and society was going through a backlash,' he says. 'I felt there was so much prejudice towards gay people - to be homosexual at the time implied you might have HIV or Aids. It was not an easy time to be gay. But there on stage, and then in the film, was Madonna and her dancers, and six of them were gay, and Madonna was discussing those friends she had lost to the disease rather than keeping silent. I just found it very inspiring and helpful.'

Zwaan and his co-director, Gould, tracked down the six men, who still worked in the world of dance and entertainment, and, after persuasion, reunited them for the first time in two decades. It was an experience Crumes III recalls as 'joyful'.

'We are like brothers, we have this bond because of those experiences we shared a quarter of a century ago,' he says. 'This reunion has just brought tears to all of us, and, amazingly, we picked up where we left off.'

'I don't think we realised how much of ourselves were missing until we saw each other again,' Stea adds. 'Really, that tour was a formative time for me in that it gave me permission to explore who I was, explore my sexuality.'

Prince And Madonna Almost Toured Together, But He Said 'The World Isn't Ready'

The greatest co-headlining superstar tour of all time almost happened. Until Prince decided the world wasn't ready for that much awesome. The story of the never-to-be Royalty Tour came from Madonna/U2 manager Guy Oseary on Thursday night, in a loving Instagram tribute to Prince, who died earlier in the day at age 57 at his Minneapolis home.

'I met Prince when I was 12 years old. I asked for his autograph. He wrote 'Love God,'' wrote Oseary, who rose from a teenage A&R gig at Madonna's Maverick Records to his current position as one of the biggest managers in the business, with a client list that includes comedy superstar Amy Schumer. Oseary described the walls of his teenage room as being covered with Prince posters, visible from the street outside the two-bedroom apartment he shared with his dad.

Flash forward many years later and Oseary said he reconnected with Prince, with whom he'd become friendly. 'I called him a few years back with the idea of @Madonna and Prince going on tour together. I pitched it to Madonna and within a second she said 'I like it, we can call it the Royalty Tour... The Queen and The Prince'.... I love the way she thinks... When I told Prince the idea he said: 'the world isn't ready for this, it's too big.''

The hook-up made sense, and not only because the pair were two of the most pioneering video music artists of all time, practically helping to invent the genre (along with Michael Jackson) in the 1980s. Prince appeared twice on Madonna's 1989 album Like a Prayer, on the distorted guitar into to the title track, as well as on the duet 'Love Song.'

Despite Prince's shut-down of the idea, Oseary said he always thought he might still pull off the double bill one day. '@Madonna performed in #stpaul last year and Prince was generous enough to host us and perform for us after that show at his home #paisleypark,' he recalled. 'He didn't go on stage until 3am, and per usual the show performance was mindblowing. He joined me this last New Years in St Bart's and performed for my friends party at what will now be the last time I saw him. It's the one and only time I was able to actually work with him directly. I won't forget that electrifying performance. Or the smile on his face that night. And the love that he gave me.'

Oseary said Prince always treated him kindly, even if they didn't always agree and they sometimes argued for hours. 'But he understood that I respected him dearly and cared for him,' he wrote. 'I tried my best to help him on record business matters.. And even in his passing I'm here to help.. I would have done anything I could and wish I achieved more for him on his very clear issues.. The man had the strongest of opinions on contracts and on artists rights.'

The post was accompanied by a photo taken in the summer of 1999, in which Oseary is seated next to a chatty Madonna, who is right next to fashion icon Donatella Versace. On the far end of the table is Prince, who Guy clearly has his eyes locked on. 'I have the original lyrics to 'purple rain' on my wall and I was always too embarrassed to tell him,' he said. 'Maybe he would think I was crazy for paying so much years back for those lyrics or maybe he would just take it off my wall and say 'thank you, I was looking for this'... Who would stop him?.. Not me.. Today not only will doves cry, we all cry.. You will be missed.. I love you.. Rest in peace.'

Madonna herself visited Rocco's school in North London today to meet with his teachers. At the independent school where Rocco is a student, youngsters can study over 20 A-level subjects in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Madonna And Rocco Continue Reconciliation With Gallery Visit

The Like A Virgin singer took her 15-year-old son and a group of his friends to the Barbican arts centre, to view the Strange and Familiar exhibit.

Madonna and Rocco, a photography enthusiast, are reportedly back on good terms following her ongoing custody battle with his father Guy Ritchie.

'Madonna and Rocco spent some quality time together talking about photography, which is one of their mutual interests,' a source close to the star tells MailOnline.com. 'They seem to have come a long way since she and Rocco were reunited.'

Legal proceedings were opened in London and New York after the teenager refused to return to his mother's home in Manhattan in December last year following a Christmas break with his dad in England.

However, the custody fight now appears to be close to over after Madonna and Guy met for talks in London last week.

The mother-and-son outing to the exhibition was the site of Madonna and Rocco's second day out in just over a week. Last Monday (11April) they watched the superhero blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice at a cinema.

Madonna And Guy Ritchie Meet For Custody Talks

The former couple have been embroiled in a legal battle to decide whether Rocco, 15, should live in London with director Guy or in New York with Madonna, and judges in both cities urged the parents to come to an agreement out of court.

The Material Girl singer jetted into London at the start of April and Guy was spotted dropping Rocco off at her home a few days later. The teenager left smiling after two hours and they reunited once more for a cinema date to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on Monday.

It now appears Madonna and Guy are trying to build bridges themselves. The 47-year-old director was pictured arriving at Madonna's London home on his bicycle in a white tracksuit on Wednesday evening, emerging 'some time' later, according to MailOnline.

Rocco was also snapped entering the house that evening and leaving Thursday morning after spending the night. In the pictures, Rocco, seems in high spirits as he walks away clutching his skateboard.

The custody case was closed in London in March so it could be pursued solely in New York. High Court Judge Justice MacDonald urged the former couple to find an amicable solution before they miss out on the rest of his childhood.

Madonna's arrival at Heathrow Airport in London on Thursday was featured on the front cover of the Friday edition of the London Metro newpaper.

Madonna lands in London

Madonna has touched down in London, reportedly in an attempt to reunite with her son Rocco and get him back to school in America.

Bad news for the Hung Up singer though – Rocco and his father are currently thought to be holidaying in the Maldives.

The pop star recently ended her worldwide Rebel Heart tour, from which 15-year-old Rocco abruptly left in 2015. He moved in with his father Guy Ritchie and step-mother Jacqui Ainsley, and Guy and Madonna have been locked in a bitter custody battle since.

In March, a British judge ruled that English proceedings could be halted and all custody discussion would take place in America. Madonna wants 15-year-old Rocco to return to live with her in New York state while the teen has requested to live in London with his father.
