Madonna and family hit slopes in Gstaad

Madonna is known for buff biceps and abs of steel at 55, and she doesn’t want her kids getting soft around the middle either.

Madge and her brood - including son Rocco, 13, and daughter Lourdes, 17 - have been hitting the slopes in Gstaad, 'skiing every day,' spies said. During one run, Madonna was overheard saying of her family’s attitude at high altitude: 'We go big or go home.'

Madge nudged Rocco, one insider said, quipping, 'When you’re with me, it’s hard-core exercise. With me, it’s nothing but exercise.' She then joked to a friend, 'He doesn’t do that with his dad,' meaning British director Guy Ritchie.

Brave Rocco, who’s been taking a cue from his father and shooting movies on the slopes, we hear, shot back to his mom, 'Drop it!'

Meantime, La Guardia HS student Lourdes turned heads with her New York style at the ritzy GreenGo Club, we hear, when she showed up in 'jeans and a cropped, sheer top.' 'This place is filled with Dior and Hermes, even for the teen set who all go to Le Rosey,' sniffed a source. A rep for Madonna didn’t get back to us.

Madonna jets to Switzerland after ‘SNL’

After appearing with Jimmy Fallon on 'Saturday Night Live,' Madonna jetted to Gstaad, Switzerland, to spend the holidays with design icon Valentino.
Sources tell us Madonna, newly single after breaking up with her boy toy Brahim Zaibat, planned to spend the holidays and celebrate New Year’s in the ritzy ski resort, along with her daughter Lourdes.
We’re told Valentino has been prepping for her arrival by decking out three four-story-tall trees in white and golden lights. Local sources said he’s also throwing his annual New Year’s Eve party, which will climax with fireworks over the mountains.
On Christmas Eve, the ever-tanned 'emperor' and his partner, Giancarlo Giammetti, were spotted toy shopping for friends’ kids. When a pal suggested the designer try out one of the hula hoops he was buying for one of the children, Valentino laughed and declined, saying he 'only hula-hoops at home.' Also spotted in Gstaad was jeweler Laurence Graff pushing a stroller with his girlfriend.

This week in Michigan history: 'Like a Virgin' tops charts

Bay City native Madonna’s song 'Like a Virgin' reached the top of the Billboard charts on Dec. 22, 1984 - and stayed there for six weeks.

Ironically, the song that made her career hadn’t been written for her or even for a female singer, according to 'The Billboard Book of Number One Hits.' Warner Brothers Records executive Michael Ostin happened to have a meeting with Madonna the night after he’d heard the song, and when he played it for her, the future pop icon grabbed the chance to make it hers.

The 55-year-old, who grew up in the same neighborhood where Bob Seger and his family lived, attended St. Frederick’s in Pontiac and St. Andrew’s and West Junior High in Rochester before graduating from Rochester’s Adams High School and studying ballet at the University of Michigan for a year. Her father was a Chrysler/General Dynamics engineer.

Before college, Madonna took dance with private instructor Christopher Flynn, who ran the Christopher Ballet in Rochester and took her to the Detroit gay dance club Menjo’s

Madonna ranks No. 1 as music's top earning woman

With earnings of $125 million (£76,317,235.48), pop singer Madonna is the highest-paid woman in music, easily surpassing Lady Gaga and country-pop singer Taylor Swift, Forbes said on Wednesday.

Her income for the 12-month period used by the magazine also made her the highest-earning celebrity overall, it said.

Much of Madonna's earnings from June 2012 to June 2013 were from her worldwide MDNA Tour, which pulled in $305 million. But the 55-year-old singer, who jumped from ninth place in 2012, also made money with merchandising sales, her fragrance and from her Material Girl clothing line.

She is 'music's top earner of any genre or gender and the highest-paid celebrity of any stripe,' according to Forbes.

Lady Gaga, with $80 million, jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 this year, despite her Born This Way Ball tour being cut short due to an injury. Gaga, 27, released her album 'ARTPOP' after the cut off date for Forbes' annual earnings calculations.

Swift, 23, dropped from second place in 2012 to third this year. Her $55 million in earnings came from sales of her latest album 'Red' as well as endorsement deals, records sales and touring.

Forbes compiled the list after estimating pre-tax income based on record sales, concert tickets, touring information merchandise sales and interviews with concert promoters, lawyers and managers. It also looked at data from the Pollstar trade magazine, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan.

Singer Beyonce, 32, came in fourth, not far behind with $53 million. The R&B star, who rose two places from last year, was also on the road with her Mrs. Carter World Tour, and earned cash from her House of Dereon clothing line and endorsement deals.

Jennifer Lopez, 44, rounded out the top five women with $45 million. Although her earnings dropped after she left her spot as a judge on the TV singing competition show 'American Idol,' she still earned plenty of money from her world tour and the Latin singing competition show 'Q'Viva' for the Fox television network.

Country singer and 2005 'American Idol' winner Carrie Underwood, 30, was a newcomer to the list at No. 9. Underwood, who played the lead role of Maria in a live version of 'The Sound of Music' for television earlier this month, earned $31 million from her latest album 'Blown Away' and touring.

Madonna and Boyfriend Brahim Zaibat Break Up

Madonna is once again a single lady.

The 55-year-old pop star and her boyfriend Brahim Zaibat have broken up, a rep for the singer confirms to E! News. No word on why Madonna and the 25-year-old dancer went their separate ways, but some are speculating the couple ended their three-year relationship because of busy and conflicting schedules.

Zaibat, who worked as a backup dances during Madonna's recent MDNA world tour, is currently competing on the French version of Dancing With the Stars.

Madonna and Zabat's last big red carpet appearance together was at the Met Gala in NYC back in May. The former lovebirds walked the carpet together in coordinating punk-inspired outfits and posed for pics as a couple.

The duo was also spotted last week at an NYC Kabbalah center.

Madonna supports daughter on stage

Madonna watched her daughter, Lourdes Leon, star in her school's version of 'Grease' last night on Friday night.

The 'Girl Gone Wild' hitmaker attempted to keep a low profile as she attended LaGuardia High School in New York City with her other children, Rocco, David and Mercy to cheer on the 17-year-old fashion designer as she played Betty Rizzo in the iconic musical.

An eyewitness told UsMagazine.com that Lourdes won rave reviews for her performance: '[She was] really good. The show was completely sold out, and people were scalping tickets beforehand.'

The insider added: 'She is a great singer, dancer and actress and seemed completely comfortable on the stage. She also seemed like she was having a lot of fun with the part.'

Lourdes thanked her mother and father, Carlos Leon, in the event's program.

It states: 'Lola Leon (Betty Rizzo) is a senior Drama major at LaGuardia and this is her second annual musical. Last year she performed the role of Elaine in 'Sweet Charity' at LaGuardia and is very grateful to be able to participate in such an elaborate production for the second year in a row. Previous work in musical theatre before that include ensemble roles in 'Hair' and 'Cabaret' at ArtsEd in London. She would like to thank her parents with all of her heart for giving her guidance and love and supporting her passions wholeheartedly.'

Madonna Writes In Support Of Gay Rights In Russia

Madonna has stepped up her fight for gay rights in Russia by writing an open letter calling for change.

The Material Girl star sparked controversy during her trip to Russia last year by publicly backing jailed punk stars Pussy Riot and voicing her support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The move prompted activists in the country to file a lawsuit against the star, which was later dismissed, over claims she violated a local law banning the promotion of homosexuality.

Madonna has refused to back down, and she has now written an open letter demanding supporters around the world band together to 'fight against the Russian government's campaign of hate'.

The singer has thrown her support behind the Human Rights Campaign's Love Conquers Hate drive, which she insists is more relevant than ever for Russia as the 2013 Winter Olympics in Sochi approach.

She writes, 'Right now in Russia, LGBT people....are being targeted by hateful new laws that outlaw support for LGBT equality. Even with the 2014 Sochi Olympics just a few months away, fair-minded Russians are facing fines, harassment, and violence at the hands of thugs.'

'At this dangerous moment in Russian history, we as advocates have a responsibility to speak up and take our hopeful message global. That's why I'm joining Hrc's Love Conquers Hate campaign, in hopes that more and more fair-minded people around the world will stand up and fight against the Russian government's campaign of hate....'

'The goal of these hateful laws (in Russia) is to leave LGBT Russians feeling isolated. Worthless. Completely alone. Together, we can send a message to LGBT Russians that the world is on their side, and that those who seek to support them aren't alone in this fundamental fight for fairness. It's time for love to conquer hate everywhere, for everyone. I hope you'll stand with me in this fight.'

The Queen of Pop's Raising Malawi organisation and the late Hollywood legend's charity will join forces with the Grassroot Soccer program, which helps educate youngsters about Hiv prevention and testing through the power of the hugely popular sport.

The Material Girl says, 'I'm excited to partner with The Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation to expand Grassroot Soccer's Hiv prevention programs in Malawi.'

'I'm passionate about education especially and these programs give girls and boys the tools they need to live healthier, more productive lives. Elizabeth Taylor was a role model for many, including myself!'

'She devoted a large part of her life to making the world a better place. I know she would be pleased to see her work continue in the fight against Aids.'

Cumberbatch: Name impressed Madonna

Madonna was impressed by Benedict Cumberbatch's 'weird name' when they met.

The British actor has recalled being introduced to the music superstar for the first time. He claims Madonna found his moniker rather amusing.

'She said, 'You’re the one with the strange name.' I said, 'Yes, I am, Madonna,'' Benedict laughed to the latest British edition of GQ magazine.

The 37-year-old star also discussed his love life in the interview. Despite recently being voted the world's sexiest actor, Benedict is currently single. He admits that having a successful Hollywood career has changed the way women treat him.

'It is harder [meeting women], because people think they know more about you than they actually do,' he explained. 'And you can’t control that....you can’t control perceptions of you..

Benedict has developed a reputation for being posh because he is so well spoken and has an unusual name. He wishes people would look past the surface and realise he is a down-to-earth guy.
