The MDNA Tour One Year Anniversary!

This time last year fans around the world were waiting for the news and pictures to come in from the opening night of the MDNA Tour in Tel Aviv.

Months of build up, teaser pictures and rumours circulated but this night would finally reveal the truth and put Madonna on the front pages of the world's press once again.

This tour brought fans much closer into the tour experience, with MDNA dancers and musicians tweeting pictures from soundchecks and their journey around the globe.

One year on, how do you feel about the MDNA tour? Did you see it in person, experience the golden triangle, get to see a soundcheck or are you still waiting to watch it on the DVD? Add your thoughts by hitting the 'Comments' button below this post.

Madonna Sells NYC Apartment She Owned With Sean Penn

This used to be her playground - but no longer. Six months after Madonna first listed her lavish Central Park West apartment in New York City for $23.5 million, the Material Girl has finally found a buyer. According to the Wall Street Journal, the 54-year-old pop icon sold her 14-room duplex to hedge fund manager Deepak Narula last week for millions less than the original asking price.
The 6,000-square-foot co-op, housed in the 1911-built Harperley Hall, had been lingering on the market since November. In February, the 'Give Me All Your Luvin'' singer cut the price by 15 percent, to $19.995 million. And brokers tell the Journal that Narula paid even less than that.
Madonna purchased the apartment nearly three decades ago with then-husband Sean Penn, whom she married in 1985 and then divorced in 1989. At the time, it was a single unit; she later combined it with two other units on the fifth and sixth floors to make a duplex.
All told, the apartment has 14 rooms, including six bedrooms, a windowed dining room, an eat-in kitchen, and two living rooms with French doors that open up onto Juliet balconies overlooking Central Park. There are also eight bathrooms.
Her brother, Christopher Ciccone, did all the decorating, according to a feature in Architectural Digest in 2007. 'I wanted to create a New York apartment,' he told the mag of his design inspiration. 'I wanted to make a space for her that was elegant without being weak, peaceful without being boring.'
'She prefers New York to Los Angeles because when she's here she can relax,' he added. 'There's a city here - you feel you are with people, living with the rest of the world, not confined to an automobile. But it still had to be a place she would feel safe in.'
These days, the superstar is safe and sound in another New York City sanctuary - a huge space on the Upper East Side that she purchased for $32.5 million in 2009, shortly after her divorce from second husband Guy Ritchie.

Madonna and Tutu team up for women at London charity gig

Singers Beyonce and Madonna, activist Gloria Steinem and Bishop Desmond Tutu will be among big names reaching out to a billion people from a pop concert in London on Saturday with a message of empowerment for women across the planet.
The 'Sound of Change Live' gig headlined by Beyonce, Florence + the Machine and Jennifer Lopez will be broadcast live from Twickenham sports stadium to 150 countries, and on primetime TV in the United States the following day, organisers said on Tuesday.
The four-hour concert could fund at least 120 projects supporting women and girls in more than 70 nations, if all the tickets are sold, they said.
Organised by the Chime for Change campaign, started by Italian fashion house Gucci, every ticket buyer will be able to choose which project their ticket will fund in what the campaign said was a world first for such a venture.
Madonna will be a presenter at the gig alongside other musicians, public figures, activists, film directors and actors including Indian stars Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan.
'Sixty percent of the children in the world not in school are girls,' Madonna said. 'Two-thirds of the world's illiterate are women. I do not accept this. We need to change this and we will change this.'
In addition to performances and collaborations from artists, the concert, which starts at 1700 GMT, will serve as a platform to broadcast inspirational and provocative films and stories highlighting women's issues around the world.

Madonna: Elton and I have made up

Madonna has confirmed that her feud with Elton John is over, after he took her out for dinner.
The pair, who had been embroiled in a decade-long animosity, finally made up a restaurant in Nice, France.
'After we kissed and hugged, he paid for my dinner, as he should,' she told Extra TV, denying that she kicked him in the groin.
Elton - who previously called the Material Girl a 'fairground stripper' - said to Extra TV: 'I apologised profusely because what I said should never have appeared in public. That's over and done with.'
Madonna - who picked up the Top Touring Artist prize at the Billboard Music Awards - also revealed how she loves getting her children involved with her work. Her 16-year-old daughter Lourdes helped out with the costumes, while her 12-year-old son Rocco was on stage with her.
'My daughter worked in the costume department and she loved it. My son was in the show, and he loved it,' she said.
The 54-year-old, who also has two adopted children - son David Banda and daughter Mercy James, both 8 - explained how she juggles raising her four children.
'I try to find the right balance between being there for them and guiding them and also being an artist. I'm trying to find enough time in the day to do those jobs well,' she explained.

Madonna Met Kim Kardashian When She Was a Little Girl

Kim Kardashian made headlines earlier this month when she posted a picture of herself with pop icon Madonna at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute Gala in New York City. She captioned the shot, 'When we first MET Madonna' - but as it turns out, it wasn't the stars' first meeting after all.
As the Material Girl revealed to Extra's Jerry Penacoli, the two were actually introduced a long time ago, before Kardashian was famous in her own right. 'I met her years and years ago when she was a little girl, believe it or not,' Madonna, 54, told Penacoli after accepting the Top Touring Artist prize at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 19.
'She told me she was a huge fan of mine, and it was during the time I was wearing all of the rubber bracelets on my arms,' she continued. (The singer famously sported an armful of black rubber bangles in the mid-1980s.) 'I took off all of the bracelets and gave them to her, and then I completely forgot about it. She reminded me when I saw her the other night. Now she's a pregnant lady!'
Of course, that's not the only thing that's changed in the last couple of decades. Though Madonna can still rock a bodysuit and thigh-high tights onstage (as she did at the Billboard Awards), her offstage life now includes four kids: Lourdes, 16, Rocco, 12, David Banda, 8, and Mercy James, also 8.
'I try to find the right balance between being there for them and guiding them, and also being an artist,' she told Extra of how she manages both fame and family. 'I'm trying to find enough time in the day to do those jobs well.'
'I try to be very clear with them. This is my persona for work,' she added. 'What we aspire to do is to work and to be good people. If you don't have those two things, fame is nothing, so I try to drill that into their heads.'

Madonna Talks MDNA DVD, New Album Rumours, Charity

Right after winning Top Touring Artist at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night, we caught up with Madonna backstage for a quick chat. The pop icon discussed her upcoming MDNA concert special, new album rumors and her charitable initiatives in Africa and beyond.
Madonna was quick to quiet any notion that she had started work on a new studio album. 'No, not yet. I just finished editing the DVD of my ('MDNA') concert,' adding jokingly, 'so I haven't had any free time.'
Madonna's editing handiwork will be revealed on June 22, when her MDNA Tour concert special premieres on premium network EPIX. The concert will debut at 8 p.m. EST that night on EPIX's TV network and online at EpixHD.com and on EPIX apps. A home video release of the tour is due out in fall, possibly in September.
The globe-trekking MDNA Tour was 2012's highest-grossing trek and the 10th-biggest tour of all time according to Billboard Boxscore. It played 88 shows on four continents to over 2.2 million attendees. The tour supported her 2012 studio album 'MDNA,' which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
At the Billboard Music Awards, Madonna also spoke about her continued commitment to girls education and outreach in Malawi and beyond.
'I continue to do my work there,' she said, noting that her organization had recently finished building 10 schools, 'which I'm very proud of,' and that she continues 'to do work with various orphanages, hospitals, medical trainees, supporting doctors (and) pediatricians.'
She continued, saying how she's 'trying to expand' her efforts 'beyond Malawi to other parts of the world.'
As part of that charitable expansion, she recently sold a Fernand Leger painting for $7.2 million, the proceeds of which will benefit her Ray of Light Foundation that supports girls' education projects in the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.
The 1921 painting, titled 'Trois Femmes a la Table Rouge,' was sold at a Sotheby's auction on May 7, exceeding pre-sale expectations. Madonna had owned the work since 1990, when she bought it at Sotheby's for $3.4 million.

The Impossible Feat of Billboard Award-Winning MDNA Tour

Sunday night Madonna received a Billboard Music Award for the Top Touring Artist of 2012. Her MDNA tour, which brought in $305 million, was a musical and visual extravaganza. Madonna performed with 140,000 pounds of gear suspended above her head. She danced on 42-square-inch squares undulating up and down, reaching eight feet above the stage. What’s more, at each of the 88 stops of the tour, the stage had been built in a few short hours by a local crew who has never seen it (or the traveling roadies) before.
Rock concerts descend upon a host site and then quickly disappear. The only certainty is that of unforeseen obstacles. How do they get the show to go on every night, no matter what?
The people who know the answer to that question work for TAIT, the company behind Madonna’s stage set. TAIT has built the sets for all ten highest grossing tours of all time, including for Roger Waters, The Rolling Stones, and U2. TAIT has developed expertise in designing complex stage sets that can be safely, quickly, and cost effectively put together and taken apart.
I recently spoke with the project manager who worked on the MDNA tour, James Erwin, about how the MDNA stage was designed to deliver consistent performance despite vastly differing circumstances on each of the tour’s stops.

Madonna accepts Top Touring Award

Thanks to the worldwide success of her MDNA Tour, Madonna was honored as the Top Touring Artist at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, held on Sunday night (May 19) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The legendary diva took the stage with a touch of sass, following an introduction by Will.i.am that was set to the tune of 'Like a Virgin.' Referring to a preceding montage of MDNA footage, she proclaimed, 'It took longer to negotiate whether I could show my ass in that trailer than it took to negotiate that tour!'
With that out of the way, Madge delved into a laundry list of thank you's, including choreographers Rich and Tone Talauega, costume designer Arianne Phillips, musical director Kevin Antunes, set designer Mark Fisher, Live Nation's Arthur Fogel, and of course, her fans. She also thanked her four children, two of which accompanied her on the blockbuster tour.
'They say that it takes a village to raise a child,' Madonna said, with her notecards humbly visible. 'It took several international villages to put my show together.'
Madonna also thanked her fans saying: 'A showgirl needs her fans. Thank you for supporting me for three decades.'
The 88-show MDNA tour grossed $305 million, according to Billboard Boxscore. It's the pop icon's latest chart landmark in a career full of them, including records for Hot 100 top 10 singles (38 of her overall 56 Hot 100 hits) and Dance Club Songs No. 1s (43).

Madonna's pre Met Ball vacuum photo causes spike in sales

Before she hit the Met Ball in a full black wig and tartan ensemble, Madonna Instagrammed this snap of herself with the caption, 'Cleaning up before the Met Ball'.
According to our sources, the star was using a Miele S4 vacuum hose to make sure her bathroom was in tip top shape before she hit the red carpet.
Weirdly, Miele have seen a dramatic increase in sales calls for this particular model - so much so that the brand is thinking about developing a new range of vacuums in Madge's honour!
Miele's Marketing Director, Dominic Worlsey, said, 'Miele has seen vacuum sales calls more than double since Madonna posted the photo. We've had so much interest that we've contacted her as a potential brand ambassador to launch the 'Immaculate Collection' of Miele vacuums. Inspired by the fashion forward icon, the range could emulate Madonna's most unforgettable outfits; from a pink Material Girl design, to an edgy look reminiscent of her Jean Paul Gaultier pointy braziers.''

Rita Ora to front Madonna fashion line?

Rita Ora is set to front Madonna's new clothing line, Material Girl, according to reports.
The How We Do singer has apparently signed a £500,000 deal and already shot campaign photos for the label, run by Madonna and her daughter Lourdes, according to The Sun.
It was reportedly Lourdes who championed Rita, 22, as being the perfect fit for their brand.
A source told The Sun: 'Lourdes has been a fan of Rita for a while and has been to many of her gigs. She persuaded her mum to see her.'
'They met at the Met Ball in New York last week and Madonna admired Rita's attitude so signed the idea off.'
'Rita jumped at the chance because she's such a fan of the Queen Of Pop. She also hopes it will help her crack the States in the same way she has the UK.'
Kelly Osbourne, Georgia May Jagger and Taylor Momsen have all modelled for Material Girl in the past.

Madonna’s 'American Life': Obscene But Not Heard

madonnalicious readers Iain Christiansen and Jonathan Godfrey shares with our readers this article about Madonna's 2003 American Life album:

A friend and I got together to build an in-depth article that looks ten years back to 'American Life', Madonna’s worst-selling studio album. The polarizing concept album garnered a variety of negative headlines as the popstar departed from her traditional pop sensibilities and used a stripped-down acoustic voice to narrate her views on the state of America in 2003.
The article brings up some interesting points as to where she was musically and how the message of the album may resonate, even ten years later. It also compares the performance of the article to Erotica as both were highly underrated concept albums.

Psy: Madonna complimented me

Psy received a 'drunken' compliment from Madonna at the Met Gala.
The South Korean singer attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala earlier this week, where he met the queen of pop.
Dressed in a short brunette wig in honour of the punk theme, Madonna seemed to be having a great time and merrily enjoyed a conversation with Psy.
'I was so overwhelmed, because last October I had a performance with Madonna and I met her again at Met Ball,' he excitedly told Australian radio show hosts Kyle and Jackie O.
'What she told me was, 'I heard your new song, how can you do that one more time?' And then she said something I can't say and I was like, 'Oh my god, really? That means a lot,' and she said, 'No I'm drunk!''

The concert includes performances of several of her biggest hits including 'Vogue,' 'Like A Prayer' and 'Hung Up.' 'My show is a journey...the journey of a soul from darkness to light. It is part cinematic musical theatre – part spectacle and sometimes intimate performance art. It is journey from anger to love and from chaos to order. There are good guys and bad guys to help illustrate this point. Sometimes I play both. It must be watched with an open heart from beginning to end. I am sure if it is viewed this way, you will walk away feeling inspired, invigorated and will want to make the world a better place,' concluded Madonna in describing the show’s intent.
EPIX CEO and President Mark Greenberg commented, 'Madonna’s stunning musical performance and show-stopping moves continue to prove that she is truly a timeless entertainer. Madonna sells Leger painting for $7.2m

A painting by Fernand Leger owned by Madonna has been sold for $7.2 million (£4.7m) in New York.
The singer bought the 1921 Cubist work, Three Women at the Red Table, in 1990 for $3.4m (£2.2m).
According to Sotheby's, proceeds from the sale 'will benefit Madonna's Ray of Light Foundation, supporting girls' education projects in the Middle East and South Asia'.
'Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen!' said the pop star on Facebook.
Before Tuesday's sale, Madonna said she wanted 'to trade something valuable for something invaluable - educating girls'.
The sale formed part of a Sotheby's sale of Impressionist and modern art that took more than $230m (£148.6m).
Les Pommes, a still life from by French artist Paul Cezanne, fetched the highest price, selling for $41.6m (£26.9m).
L'Amazone, a portrait of French socialite Baroness Marguerite de Hasse de Villers by Amedeo Modigliani, went for $25.9m (£16.7m).
A Pablo Picasso sculpture of his young muse Sylvette, meanwhile, sold for $13.6m (£8.8m).
Overall the auction failed to live up to last year's event, which saw a version of Edvard Munch's The Scream sell for a world record $119.9m (£77.4m).

Madonna Strips Down as She Keeps the Party Going

The fun wasn't over for the Met Gala 2013 attendees in NYC last night as they flocked to the Standard Hotel following the ball for the official afterparty at the Boom Boom Room. Madonna stripped out of her bum-baring Met Gala outfit and changed into a fishnet body stocking and black lacy lingerie to mingle with guests like Katy Perry and Frank Ocean.
She wasn't the only star who made a costume change - Amanda Seyfried took off her gown and changed into a baggy black t-shirt to hit the dance floor with Frank. Meanwhile, Miranda Kerr met up with January Jones, Nicole Richie connected with Kirsten Dunst, and Mary-Kate Olsen snuggled with boyfriend Olivier Sarkozy.
Mary-Kate and Olivier weren't the only couple at the late-night bash, as Jennifer Morrison was spotted holding hands with her Once Upon a Time costar Sebastian Stan and Kate Bosworth hugged Michael Polish. If you missed out on all the excitement last night, be sure to check out our collection of all the red carpet fashion from the 2013 Met Gala to get caught up!

Madonna Made A Big Entrance In Givenchy At The Met Gala

After Beyonce took to the carpet, I have to say, a sigh of relief could be heard from the press lined up along either side of the red staircase at the 2013 Met Gala. With King Bey in the house, it had to be all over, didn't it? *Knowing smirk* The Met Gala may have had their king, but there was still one queen who had not arrived. I'm talking of course, about Madonna, the queen of pop incarnate.
Just after Bey made her way all the way through the museum's gilded doors, the tell-tale explosion of flashbulbs and European-accented shouting bubbled up from the photo pit, and our sighs caught in our throats. Madonna had entered, wearing an all-over studded, tartan Givenchy blazer fastened over a fishnet bodysuit and very little else. Well no, that's not true. Although Madge's fantastic gams were on prominent display, there was a whole lot going on in her ensemble, including my personal favorite detail: an oversize padlock choker engraved with the letter 'M.' There were so many more things though!
From the cross hanging down the back of her ensemble like a sacrilegious tail to her bright red lips and magenta pumps, there were countless details, each one elevating the ensemble to new heights of punk rock perfection.
The consensus among those we spoke to seemed to be that to be punk one needs not necessarily, say, have a mohawk or accessorize exclusively with safety pins, and Madonna was no different. I overheard her telling a journalist who asked her about her upcoming trip abroad to build schools for girls, that 'giving girls an education is the most punk thing you can do.' UM, YES. 1000 TIMES YES. But so is totally revolutionizing the place of women in music, performing fearlessly, and WORKING not just fishnet, plaid, and piles of silver, but rocking all three of those things, plus a jet black bob AND red lip TOGETHER.
Could Madonna be the queen of the 2013 Met Gala? We don't like to play favorites, but let's just say it's a close race.

Fan report from the Material Girl Pop-Up Exhibit

madonnalicious reader David shares his story and pictures from the Material Girl Pop-Up Exhibition of some of Madonna's iconic outfits at Macy's in Los Angeles last week:

As I expected there was a long line wrapped around Macy's with a lot of security. Fans dressed their best and some with memorabilia on hand ready for signatures from M. There were rumors and speculation as to whether or not she would show up...my feeling was 'no way and no how'...which ended up being the case but you never know.
People started pouring in around 6:30. Young girls in ‘Material Girl’ wear were moving / dancing around to the mixes the DJ was spinning and to Madonna videos playing in the background. Press, photographers, waiters passing sliver trays of sparkling pink lemonade and cake pops, a security guard posted at every glass case displaying one of M’s iconic outfits.
The scene wasn’t as chaotic as I had anticipated but it was busy and impressive to be up close to the small iconic outfits worn on Madonna’s tiny frame.
