MDNA Tour nominated for three Billboard Touring Awards

Finalists for the 2012 Billboard Touring Awards boast a diverse mix of genres, touring strategies, venue types, and positions on the career arc and their broad geographic footprint points to the increasingly global nature of the touring industry.
Among the finalists are mega-tours by such veteran artists as Roger Waters, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Madonna, Coldplay and Kenny Chesney, along with newer stars like Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum, the Black Keys and Taylor Swift.
The Billboard Touring Awards are primarily based on actual numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore, reflecting real business being done, as opposed to any sort of voting procedure. The exceptions would be such honors as Legend Of Live (Neil Diamond), the Concert Marketing & Promotion Award, the Humanitarian Award (the Apollo Theater), the Road Warrior Award presented by Shell ROTELLA, and the Creative Content Award (Michael Jackson Immortal by Cirque du Soleil), as well as the Eventful Fans' Choice Award, the latter determined by online fan 'demands' at Eventful.com for Boxscore's top tours.
The awards are based on numbers reported to Boxscore from Oct. 1, 2011, through Sept. 30, 2012.

The MDNA tour is nominated in three categories:

TOP TOUR
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Wrecking Ball
Madonna, MDNA
Roger Waters, The Wall Live

TOP MANAGER
Jon Landau Management (Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band)
MFM/Mark Fenwick (Roger Waters)
Guy Oseary (Madonna)

CONCERT MARKETING & PROMOTION AWARD
Demi Lovato/Hallmark
Lady Antebellum/Lipton
Linkin Park/Honda Civic
Madonna/Smirnoff
Tim McGraw/Pennzoil
Zac Brown Band/Jack Daniel's

The awards will be presented by Sandra Bernhard on Thursday 08 November at Roosevelt Hotel in New York City.

Madonna's fitness secrets

Madonna puts in a 110 per cent effort to keep herself in shape.
The 54-year-old singer works with Nicole Winhoffer - who is the creative director of her Hard Candy Fitness gyms - to maintain her incredible figure and the trainer says it is all about putting plenty of hard work.
Nicole told Us Weekly: 'It's hard work, but make time and put in 110 per cent and you will see results.'
'The only constant thing is change. Your workouts should be diversified to challenge the mind and body. If your mind and body are not challenged, you won't see results.'
Nicole also encourages the 'Material Girl' singer to set goals for herself to stay on target.
She explained: 'It's good to set goals. When you're specific about what you are reaching toward, you will get what you want.'
'Concentrating on your goals will lead them to you. Believe in yourself and work at it.'
'It's not what you are doing but how you are doing it. Sweating is a direct result of performance - it means you are doing it right. Pay attention to the exercise, what muscles you are working, how it feels, and if it challenges you. Do the things that are challenging, and break through the obstacles.'

Madonna booed after touting Obama

Madonna drew boos and triggered a walkout by several concert goers after she touted President Barack Obama on her MDNA Tour in New Orleans.
The Material Girl asked during Saturday night's performance: 'Who's registered to vote?' She added: 'I don't care who you vote for as long as you vote for Obama.'
Drawing boos in touting Obama over Republican Mitt Romney, Madonna followed: 'Seriously, I don't care who you vote for...Do not take this privilege for granted. Go vote.'
Madonna is often outspoken. Some Colorado fans, mindful of a mass shooting there, complained she used a fake gun to shoot a masked gunman in a recent concert act in Denver.
A Madonna concert in Paris in July drew ire when a video showed a swastika on a politician's forehead.

Madonna's 'Material Girl' Performed By Kindergarten Class

The kindergarten teacher who directed his students in a spirited performance of Madonna's 'Vogue' this summer is back with another pint-sized tribute to the Queen of Pop.
This time, students in Arturo Avina's class are taking on 'Material Girl,' the 1985 single that helped make Madonna a household name around the world, in their school's production of 'The Lonely Prince.'
'I love the performing arts and try to incorporate it into my lessons as much as I can to make up for the lack of support arts education receives,' Avina, who teaches a general ed curriculum at the Olympic Primary Center in Los Angeles, told HuffPost Gay Voices in an email. 'At this age, drama and theater are extremely important and can really help a student with their reading comprehension (they had to read a script and understand characters, setting, and plot), not to mention their self-confidence and their ability to work together as a team.'
Avina, who says he is a Madonna fan, went on to note, 'Sometimes a good pop song is better at telling a story than a typical nursery rhyme. And it's a lot more fun to teach when you teach what you love.'

Madonna 'Biggest Selling UK Singles Artist Ever'

Madonna has been named as the biggest-selling female artist in the history of the Official UK Singles Chart.
The veteran pop star, who first charted with Holiday back in 1984, has sold a total of 17.8 million singles in the last 28 years.
But while Rihanna is a fair way behind her in second spot with a total of 11.4m singles sold, she has managed to do that in just seven years.
And RiRi has sold three million singles in the last year alone - leading to speculation that she could be in the No 1 spot herself before too long.
Kylie Minogue was in third spot with 10.2m singles and Whitney Houston was fourth with 8.5m. Lady GaGa rounded out the top five with 7.3m.
The data was provided by The Official Charts Company, and here is the top 10 in full...

1. Madonna (17.8m)
2. Rihanna (11.4m)
3. Kylie Minogue (10.2m)
4. Whitney Houston (8.5m)
5. Lady GaGa (7.329m)
6. Britney Spears (7.324m)
7. Beyoncé (6.9m)
8. Celine Dion (6.7m)
9. Mariah Carey (6.62m)
10. Olivia Newton John (6.61m)

Madonna gets son splashed on TV

Madonna picked her own son Rocco to be drenched in water for charity.
The singer, 54, was asked who she'd like to to choose for the stunt, to raise cash for breast cancer research, on the Ellen DeGeneres show.
'I don't really have to think about it. My son is here here and I want him in that tank,' she said.
Madge told 12-year-old Rocco, whose dad is film director Guy Ritchie: 'You might never get wet, baby. I kind of suck at throwing.'
The pop queen failed to aim correctly in her attempt to splash Rocco, prompting Ellen to step in.
Rocco, who dances on stage during his mum's tour, told the audience that Madonna was 'a very good mother, but she's very strict' and asked what he thinks when she flashes herself on stage, he said: 'I actually don't see that.'
The stunt raised 10,000 dollars for the fight against breast cancer.

Madonna Masks Uncomfortable Questions

Madonna has started hiding her face behind a mask in interviews if she's quizzed on a topic she'd rather not discuss.
The pop superstar told U.S. talk show host Ellen DeGeneres she'd hold the mask in front of her face 'if you ask me a question that I feel uncomfortable with' during a taped chat earlier this week.
The Papa Don't Preach singer added, 'This is going to be a sign that I don't want to answer the question.'
DeGeneres responded by joking, 'You could just say, 'I feel uncomfortable with that question', and not answer it. You can just tell me that.'
Madonna said, 'But this is more theatrical.'
The full interview airs on Monday 29 October.

Denver fans upset after Madonna show

Some Madonna fans in Colorado have complained after the music superstar used guns during a performance on Thursday 18 October.
A gunman shot dead 12 people during a Batman film at cinema in the state in July.
Madonna started her show at the Pepsi Centre in Denver with a gun scene, which she has used in previous performances.
KUSA-TV said it received several calls from concert-goers saying they were offended she used guns and violence as part of her show in light of recent events.
In a statement before beginning the tour, Madonna said she does not condone the use of guns. She said she is using the guns as symbols of intolerance and 'the pain I have felt from having my heart broken.'

'Some like it when I show my ass, others think it obscene'

madonnalicious reader Beatrix also shares this clip she filmed of Madonna explaining why she needs to show her ass during the show in Las Vegas on Saturday 13 October.

The other day a man came up to me and he said to me 'Why do you want to show your ass on stage?' and I said to him 'Why does anybody have to show their ass on stage?' - 'So they pay attention!'
Some people like it when I show my ass...And some people think it's obscene. Now here's what I think it's obscene: A lack of humanity towards one another - the fact that we, when push comes to shove, usually choose war over compromise, judgment over compassion, and fear over love. That is obscene.'

Madonna concert does not disappoint in gay-friendly Phoenix

If you had your doubts over the gay friendliness of the Greater Phoenix area, your opinion would quickly change if you were in attendance for the Madonna concert on Tuesday, October 16, at the US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix, Arizona.
A huge gay contingent turned out to hear the Diva, but they had to wait.
The concert was technically scheduled to start at 8:30 but started a little after then with a deejay spinning Madonna music. His performance lasted a little over an hour. The crowd erupted into cheers just after 10:20 p.m. when the giant Madonna curtain came down revealing the full stage. The house lights went down at 10:29 pm to more cheers. As if on cue, Madonna took the stage at 10:30 p.m. with a gothic/religious theme. A giant fixture meant to symbolize incense was swayed down over the front of the audience by 'monks' clad in red.
Lady Gaga made it into Madonna’s act. Just after 11pm, Madonna took a swipe at Gaga as she sang her Respect Yourself standard interspersed with lyrics from GaGa’s Born This Way.
Madonna turned political almost an hour into her show when she declared that Obama won the presidential debate tonight.
She told the crowd that she loved even Republicans. 'I am a Democrat. But I love you if you are not, because we preach tolerance,' the Diva said.
Madonna also made a dramatic statement against bullying. She showed off the name AMANDA written on her back. She explained that was in tribute to a15-year-old Canadian girl, Amanda Todd, who committed suicide because of antigay bullying. The star liked bullying to terrorism. She later showed slides of young people who have committed suicide because they were gay.
Briefly delving into the political dustup she got into in Russia the diva later joked to members of the audience, 'Get a hotel room for that guys. You could get arrested for that in Russia.' She later added, 'No public displays of affection guys unless I am involved.'

Lourdes Leon talks about her 'summer job' on MDNA tour

Madonna's teenage daughter Lourdes found herself folding piles of underwear after taking a summer job working on the singer's MDNA Tour.
The 16 year old spent her school vacation getting a taste of the working world after being hired as an assistant in the wardrobe department on her mother's latest global trek.
However, Lourdes is adamant she received no special treatment as the boss' daughter - she was handed the task of sorting sweaty stage costumes and folding undergarments.
In a post on her blog, she writes, 'This summer I was surprisingly productive. So, I thought I would tell you all about the joys of folding underwear. As you probably know this woman I like to call my mother went on tour for her MDNA album.'
'As a summer job I decided to work in the wardrobe department. All of my friends were getting summer jobs and I wanted one too. Mine was a little unconventional but still a great experience and a lot of fun.'
'Being in the wardrobe department meant me and a few other girls dressed the dancers during the show when they had quick changes. Thirty seconds to totally dress a sweaty dancer can be insane and provoke mucho anxiety. Doing this night after night was pretty cray, but I loved every minute of it.'
And Lourdes, whose dad is personal trainer Carlos Leon, relished the chance to hit the road with her superstar mum.
She adds, 'It's really a great experience to be able to work on a large production, travelling around like a family, setting up for an amazing show and all having the same purpose. To be able to be a part of such an inspiring production was one of my best summers so far.'

Madonna faces court over gay rights row

Madonna will appear in court to defend allegations she encouraged gay sex between minors during a gig in Saint Petersburg.
The 'Material Girl' singer has been hit by lawsuit from a group of Russian activists which orders her to defend the comments she made during a show in August when she urged the crowd to support gay rights.
Nine members of the Trade Union of Russian Citizens are accusing her of blasphemy and damaging the cultural foundations of Saint Petersburg, claiming more than £6 million in compensation for 'moral damages' suffered during her concert.
Darya Dedova, a Union spokesperson, said: 'She insulted believers' feelings, she promoted homosexuality when there were children at the concert and this is forbidden in St Petersburg. We, the residents of the cultural capital, suffered a colossal moral damage.'
Madonna caused controversy when she asked the crowd to raise their hands while wearing pink bracelets she handed out in support of gay rights. However, a law passed last March makes promoting homosexuality illegal in the Russian city, and the activists have taken offence that children as young as 12 were at the concert.
Madonna reportedly asked the crowd to: 'Show your love and appreciation to the gay community. We want to fight for the right to be free.'
Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, also weighed in on the row, tweeting: 'With age, every former s**t tries to lecture everyone on morality. Either take off your cross, or put on your knickers.'
The 54-year-old singer is yet to appear in court - the first hearing took place on October 11, but it was postponed until October 25 because they didn't know Madonna's address to notify her, RT news reports.
Madonna previously offended the Kremlin by demanding the release of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot.

Madonna muscles her way through a spectacle at MGM Grand

When you look past the immense staging and lighting of a Madonna show, beyond the lavish costuming and the army of backing dancers and musicians populating the stage, you notice something not so fancy all the way down to the artist’s feet.
Pulled over Madonna’s feet are ankle braces that creep up from whatever shoes she wears at the moment. These are elastic, like ACE bandages, flesh-colored and not decorated in any way. These wraps are not to be celebrated, or even detected, but serve the vital purpose of keeping the whirling, stomping diva steady on her spindles. These braces are commonly worn by athletes, especially tennis and basketball players, to ward against injury while leaping and making quick cuts.
Madonna is as athletic a performer as you will see on any stage. At age 54, she is in supreme condition, and that physical fitness is the core of her stage show, which she rolled into MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday for the first of two Las Vegas performances. The second was Sunday night.
At various points during her latest stage spectacular, the 2012 MDNA Tour, Madonna performed as a gangster, a majorette and a dominatrix. She spun, leaped, strutted and happily swiveled her pelvis in a two-hour performance that would have been astonishing even without music accompaniment, given its exhausting pace.
Deep into the show, she spun around with her backside facing the audience. She unsnapped her black slacks, lowered them several inches and showed the sellout crowd what a 54-year-old tushy might look like if you married into a workout plan of toning, conditioning, speed, agility, strengthening, flexibility and endurance (the specifics of this regimen are outlined, in sweaty fashion, in her DVD series 'Addicted to Sweat.') There was a message behind the nakedly memorable moment, as she said many people find her to be obscene, but what she finds obscene is 'our lack of humanity.'

Norton: 'Madonna was charming but I failed with Kylie'

Graham Norton has revealed what he thought about two of pop’s biggest female stars after they appeared on his chat show.
The Irish comedian told the Daily Mail that despite her reputation, Madonna didn’t act like a diva when he interviewed her on his BBC1 show earlier this year:
'She didn’t make any demands. She came on, and within a few minutes she was on the floor on her hands and knees. She was on a charm offensive.'
When asked how nervous he was about meeting the Queen of Pop, Norton replied: 'Terribly. I was worried it wouldn’t happen. But oddly enough, as soon as she came up the little steps, that was it. I felt it didn’t actually matter what happened after that, because she was on the show.'
'Afterwards we went out for dinner and got really drunk - not Madonna; me and my friends - and the atmosphere all day was incredible. It was like a royal visit.'
But the 49-year-old admitted that his meeting with Kylie Minogue in the late 90s didn’t go so well:
'I failed with Kylie. I’ve seen her on other shows since, and met her myself and she was lovely, but it just didn’t work. I wonder if it was because it was the first series [it started on Channel 4 in 1998] and she thought I was out to get her.'

MDNA Fan Pictures: San Jose (Part 1)

madonnalicious reader Nick took these pictures at Madonna's first MDNA show at the HP Pavillion in San Jose on Saturday 06 October.

Notice the large black mark on the centre of Madonna's forehead in the last picture? She banged her head with her gun during 'Gang Bang' and it left a mark, she commented that it was the first time it had ever happened to her on the tour!

David Furnish shrugs off Madonna feud: 'She's an inspiration'

David Furnish has put his public feud with Madonna behind him, describing her as an 'inspiration'.
Furnish caused controversy earlier this year when Madonna beat his husband Elton John to a Golden Globe for 'Best Original Song', as he later described her as 'desperate' and also claimed that she cannot make good movies.
John has also publicly slammed Madonna, claiming in August that her career was over and that her tour had been a 'disaster'.
However, Furnish - who previously claimed that his Golden Globe comments were blown out of proportion - has now attempted to move on from the feud.
Asked by TMZ about whether Madonna is past her prime, he said: 'No, not at all. I think she's a great artist and I wish her all the best.'
'I think she is a great artist and I think she works very, very hard. She is an inspiration to all of us and I wish her all the best.'
Furnish added: 'Seriously, I love her. I wish her all the best.'
Madonna has previously forgiven John for his comments about her, explaining that he is a 'big fan'.

Madonna outraged at Taliban Shooting of 14-year-old

Madonna used the Los Angeles leg of her MDNA world tour to express outrage over the Taliban’s attempt to kill a 14-year-old girl who had spoken out against militants’ attempts to ban education for girls in northwestern Pakistan.
The Material Girl used the platform of the Staples Center stage to harness the outrage sweeping across the world about the attack on schoolgirl Malala Yousufzai and stressed the importance of people voting in the U.S. Presidential election on Nov. 6.
'It hurt me...and it made me cry,' Madonna, 54, told concertgoers at Staples Center on Oct. 10.
'The Taliban stopped her bus and shot her for writing a blog about wanting to go to school. Do you understand the sickness and absurdity of this? Do you recognize how lucky you are?'
Madonna played a second show at the Staples Center on Thursday, then brings the tour to Las Vegas on Saturday for the first of two dates at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Madame Tussauds Las Vegas unveils wax figure of Madonna

On Thursday morning, Madame Tussauds Las Vegas unveiled a wax figure of pop superstar Madonna.
The figure arrives just in time for fans to strike a pose with it before her sold-out Las Vegas shows on Oct. 13 and 14. Flanked by Roman gladiators, the figure was inspired by Madonna’s 2012 Super Bowl performance. Famous London designer Philip Treacy, whose work has been worn in Sex and the City, Harry Potter and at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, created the headdress.

Fans attending Madonna’s Las Vegas performances are encouraged to present their concert ticket at the Madame Tussauds Las Vegas box office now through Monday, Oct. 15 to receive $10 off an adult general admission ticket.

Sean Penn watches Madonna in concert in Los Angeles

Sean Penn couldn't take his eyes off Madonna at her concert in Los Angeles on Thursday.
The 'Milk' actor - who had a stormy four-year marriage to the singer from 1985 to 1989 - attended her show at the Staples Center and onlookers revealed he was quite impressed with her raunchy stage performance.
A source told RadarOnline: 'He was practically panting. Every time she thrusted or bent over, he was like 'Oh, man! I can't take this! She is too hot!'
Despite their volatile marriage, there is no bad blood between the pair and Madonna reportedly even teased Sean from the stage.
The witness said: 'At one point she stared Sean dead in the face, smiled, unzipped her pants, and mooned the crowd, but it was really like she was mooning Sean! He laughed and clutched his chest like he was going to pass out. She was wearing a black lacey thong, and her butt looked perfect! So smooth and tight...like a 20 year old's!'
Meanwhile, Sean went backstage to congratulate Madonna after her performance and witnesses said he was 'like a teenage boy meeting his idol. It was amusing, and kind of cute'.

Review: Madonna brings 'MDNA' to the Staples Center

Human contortionists festooned with wings. Robed monks, mysterious crooning priests. Gunfights in seedy hotels. Dramatized murder, with blood splattered on a billboard-sized video screen. A warrior-ninja spinning nunchuku.
These musical dramas and more highlighted pop singer Madonna’s return to Los Angeles on Wednesday night, where she appeared at the Staples Center for the first of two concerts in support of her album, 'MDNA.'
And that was just in the first act.
At various times in the second and third acts she brought out a floating drum line that played while hanging from the support beams, twirled a baton in unison with dancers/cheerleaders, and comforted a troop of soldier-dancers with an acoustic guitar, fiddle, and beat-based version of 'Masterpiece.'
She floated on a chrome carriage above the stage, crawled on a staircase near the audience, clasping the hand of a fan. The joyous energy that lit up one middle-aged man’s face as Madge focused her gaze on him could have powered the Staples Center.
Of course it did. She’s Madonna, and nobody does this stuff better. Not Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Christina or any of the other generations of pop stars who have used as a model Madonna’s tightly crafted concerts/dance showcases/art projects/spectacles. Some of them may be better singers or more acrobatic, or offer cheaper ticket prices - rafter views at Staples started at over $100, and good seats went for more than $300 - but nobody has proven so adept at delivering the proverbial goods as Madge.
One piece of evidence: the suggestive way in which she incorporated the chorus of Lady Gaga’s 'Born This Way' into Madonna’s 'Express Yourself.' Delivered as both an incitement and a generational bridge, the gesture embodied the ways in which Madonna has embraced her pop offspring.
Which is saying something, given that the album she’s supporting is one of the least challenging of her career. A mostly failed effort at continuing her chart dominance by competing with pop artists now half her age, the approach on record felt a tad desperate, less dictating the conversation than chasing it.
She front-loaded her show with tracks from 'MDNA,' crafting a film noir-inspired, acrobatically choreographed run of the first five songs on the album. From there, the drama built, both within her musical seductions and during breaks.
And as is her wont, she let loose on a mid-set sermon, this one focused on Russian band Pussy Riot, and the recent shooting of a 14-year-old Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai, allegedly at the hands of the Taliban. She protested with her voice, and with her music she shocked and awed.
Rolling on the floor during 'Human Nature,' she stripped to her bra and turned her back to the crowd. The seductress pulled down her pants to reveal her derriere, above which on the small of her back was written the name 'Malala.'
The hits continued, moving through the set like a well-crafted mixtape: 'Vogue' rendered in black and white; 'I'm a Sinner' saw Madonna with a guitar playing to a version that morphed into a kind of Indian raga. 'Like a Prayer' featured a choir of three dozen, consisting of the dancers who over the course of the night performed feats of balletic strength and agility.
Combined, the Queen of Pop delivered a grand spectacle, 90 minutes of ridiculously joyous performance. No wonder tickets were so expensive. This was some serious business that required a lot of (shirtless, muscular) manpower, and just as much feminine energy and mystique.

Madonna Renews Call To Free Jailed Russian Punk Stars

Pop superstar Madonna renewed her campaign to release the jailed members of Russian punk group Pussy Riot during her show in Los Angeles just hours after one of the women walked free from prison on Wednesday.
Three members of the band were handed two-year prison sentences for staging a protest in a church in Moscow in February, prompting an outcry from stars including Sir Paul McCartney and Madonna, who called the jail terms 'harsh' and 'inhumane'.
The women were back in court on Wednesday, and Yekaterina Samutsevich had sentence overturned after her lawyer argued the star had been restrained by police officers before the stunt and hadn't taken part.
Samutsevich walked free from court, but her bandmates - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina - had their sentences upheld.
Lawyers representing Tolokonnikova and Alekhina have revealed they now hope to take the musicians' case to the European Court of Human Rights, and Madonna addressed the issue again during her gig at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
She told the audience, 'May I remind you that two members of Pussy Riot are still in jail.'
Samutsevich has also given her first interviews since being freed, revealing the three women did not have access to any outside information during their time behind bars and she had no idea they had received such stellar support.
She tells Sky News, 'We did not have access to any video or any audio, we did not even see Madonna's performances (when she danced with the band's name scrawled on her back).'
In another interview, Samutsevich reveals she feels bad for walking free after six months in custody while her friends remain behind bars.
She tells Cnn, '(I have) mixed feelings...Of course I am very happy to be out and to be free, but I'm very upset that Nadezhda and Maria are still incarcerated...(They are) very, very upset (about being separated from their children)...but they are holding up very well.'
Samutsevich also vowed the band will continue its political fight in the future, adding, 'We are not finished, nor are we going to end our political protest...(But we will be) more cautious (in the future).'
