I've been gobsmacked about how misinforming and misrepresentative most of the media reports have been about Pussy Riot. Why they protested, what they protested against, and why they chose to go inside the cathedral to protest, these things have been given a backseat while the media's other agendas have been given the front seats.

Yesterday I read the closing statements that the three jailed Pussy Rioters were allowed to make in court earlier this month. They were articulate and intelligent, full of references to Russian philosophers, Russian poets, and the Bible, as well as to philosophical ideas of citizenship, freedom and humaneness.

At the end of hearing the closing statements the public in court clapped. I've read (but haven't been able to verify) that the judge had told the public not to applaud them. The public clapped anyway. Good for them!

The three gave their statements in Russian... obviously!... but they've been translated into US English and put online. The original Russian-language footage is also online.
