Liz Smith on smokin' Madonna (and Lourdes)

Speaking of smoking. I hardly think the overheated 'news' that Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes, caught puffing a cig, was the kind of publicity the Big M wanted, on the very day her 'MDNA' album was officially released - to mostly excellent reviews, and No.1 on iTunes in 35 countries.
In all the years I’ve known Madonna I’ve never seen her smoke. I’ve never even been in a room with her where anybody else was smoking. Apparently, she indulged back in the day, but that must have been way back. Madonna has used smoking as a 'glamorous' prop in movies and videos. Most recently, she was seen taking a drag in her 'Girl Gone Wild' video. That one is so over-the-top it’s been banned from MTV, so who’d notice smoking amid the near-naked dancers writhing around? Well, enough people noticed to cause a bit of a ruckus and now Madonna is accused of setting a bad example for 'Lola.'
This story was on top of Yahoo’s news page!
Madonna, like all normal parents - and she is, believe it or not - can’t control her children’s every move. Madonna doesn’t care much about what people say about her. But she worries over her children’s health.
Her video banned? Great. Her daughter smoking? No way to make that seem cool.

"we all smoked fags and got pissed on vodka and orange at 15!"

Really? Did we? Dontcha just LOVE ridiculous generalisations that make the poster seem equally ridiculous?

As for egging Lola on to "slut herself" through all the Hollywood hotties, you must be a person of very dubious morals.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Lola grows up very virtuous, given that her mother has spent all her life "putting it out there", so she has nothing to compete with!

Lordes has another parent, who has been very active in raising her. Carlos Leon is a HEAVY smoker. Why is he free from criticism??

Lola can do whatever she wants... she's 15, we all smoked fags and got pissed on vodka and orange at 15! - I cant wait till she's slutting her way through all the hollywood hots to be honest!... bring on your first album Lola!
BTW.. I am loving MDNA - I hated it at first and thought it was blah, now it really is right up there with Ray of Light and Confessions... it's as if those two albums had a baby and MDNA is her... Best Friend is sooo beautiful and Birthday song is hilariously joyous!

I feel bad that Lourdes will have her every move critiqued for the rest of her life. I have always admired Madonna, and I think she is amazing, but having to deal with fame must be very difficult and I also feel bad that people knock her parenting skills when all they see are a few pictures. Lourdes is 15, not 12 and although I think smoking is a bad habit, I'm sure she was just trying to fit in like other kids. I think the majority of teenagers try smoking, but 99% of them are not being photographed by a creep hiding out in the bushes. I'm more concerned that people are following Lourdes around and photographing her than I am about the experimenting with tobacco.

That Burning Sensation

Come on now, Liz. You've never seen her smoke? We remember the behind the scenes Take A Bow interview where she (with cigarette in hand) told Kurt Loder she'd occasionally smoke. Like when her wardrobe (for that video) was too tight to eat anything.

In addition to the smoking, Lola was surrounded by a few boys in that picture. Why didnt anyone pick up on that?

For better, for worse or indifferent, children are a map of their parents.

an avid reader

So what's her point? She defends Madonna's parenting skills but says there's no way to make Lola's smoking seem cool. While I agree that it's deluded to accuse Madonna of setting a bad example, I don't like the PC tone of the article and the implication that smoking is a controversial/bad thing to do. What's wrong with a teenager smoking a cigarette? Why would anyone even judge Lola for trying out something that pretty much everybody's tried at least once? I'm not saying it's good for your health but the hypocrisy really pisses me off. Rant over.
