Madonna and Macy's Ready Material Girl Launch

WWD.com today have offered more information about the Material Girl collection that is launched in August:

The biggest presentations of Material Girl will be at the Macy's stores in Herald Square, State Street in Chicago, Union Square in San Francisco, South Coast Plaza in Orange County and Dadeland in Miami. Another 75 stores will have significantly sized shops, with the remaining 120 showcasing a more moderate assortment.

Madonna is not the centerpiece of the marketing campaign supporting the launch. Rather, the most visible face of the brand in advertising and marketing materials will be the for-now-anonymous young television actress and singer. She appears mostly hidden from view in teaser ads that break this week in celebrity weeklies, cinema, outdoors in New York and San Francisco and on the Macy's Herald Square JumboTron. Her identity will be revealed in the coming weeks closer to the launch date.

'Madonna handpicked this girl,' said Dari Marder, chief marketing officer at Iconix. 'She really embodies who the Material Girl is.'

New advertising with the unveiled actress will break at the end of July in celebrity weeklies and the September issues of fashion titles such as Teen Vogue, Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, InStyle, Nylon and Paper. The campaign also will include cinema spots, outdoor, radio and online components.

All the campaign images were photographed last month in a studio and on the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Lola helped style the shoot and Madonna stepped in and photographed some of the pictures herself.

The celebrity face of Material Girl will attend the national retail launch of the line at Herald Square on Tuesday 03 August, standing in for Madonna and Lourdes, who will not be present.

The winner of the competition to meet Madonna and Lourdes will do so at an event at Macy's Herald Square in New York on Wednesday 22 September.

Madonna talks more of the Material Girl collection

Madonna's clothing range with daughter Lourdes is an 'extension' of her style.
The pair have collaborated on a children's clothing and accessories range for US department store Macy's, and Madonna confesses 13-year-old Lourdes brought much of her own personal style to the collection, entitled Material Girl.
She revealed: 'I think this line is absolutely an extension of her taste.'
'We like to combine a plaid or a flannel with a lace or leather with lace or rhinestones. So we mix and match textures and fabrics and elements that are both masculine and feminine.'
The range, which includes clothes, handbags and jewellery, will range from $12 to $40.

Madonna buffs up townhouse

The muscular Material Girl won't have far to go for a workout.
Madonna is adding a floor to her new $32 million Upper East Side triple-wide townhouse, and it will be mostly taken up by a gym, city plans show.
The addition will add 1,614 square feet to the East 81st Street mansion, bringing the total square footage to 13,847, not including the cellar. The home also has a 3,000-square-foot garden.
She is also tearing up the existing bedrooms and baths, creating a new master suite on the third floor with a boudoir flanked by a giant walk-in closet and a master bath. There will be a hair salon across the hall and a separate closet for her luggage.
There is a second master bedroom on the same floor with master closet for her boy toy du jour.
In total, 10 bedrooms are planned and 13 bathrooms. The first floor has a drawing room and what is labeled on building plans as a 'security living room' with adjoining bar.
The Georgian-style mansion also includes an elevator and two-car garage in what is described as the basement level, but is actually the ground floor. Madonna is adding a wine cellar and playroom one flight below.
Building permits filed with the city so far put the cost of renovations at $1.7 million.

Meeting Madonna 'unreal' for Robyn

Robyn has revealed meeting Madonna was like 'an out of body experience'.
The Swedish pop star supported the Queen of Pop on the European leg of her Sticky And Sweet world tour.
'It was like an out of body experience because I've been a fan of hers since I was a kid, but also because of the big machine surrounding her - it was on a level that's just unreal to me,' she told The Guardian.
'But it was very interesting and I learned a lot. (I learned) just what you have to do to maintain that level,' she added.
Robyn - real name Robyn Carlsson - is releasing three short albums this year, which includes a collaboration with rapper Snoop Dogg, following her writer's block after her self-titled 2005 offering.

Madonna boost for Lawnfest event at Kent school

Madonna dropped in to a charity music event at a Kent school, organised by the daughter of Mohamed Al Fayed.
The Lawnfest fundraiser was held on Friday night in aid of The New School at West Heath, Sevenoaks, UK.
Pop star Lemar was the headline act at the event to boost the school's bursary fund, organised by Camilla Fayed.
Madonna's appearance was to help publicise the event, which also included an art exhibition, although she did not perform.
The New School aims to rebuild young damaged lives through education.
Principal Christina Wells said: 'This fundraiser will help grant a bursary for those young people whose lives have been damaged by abuse, bereavement, bullying or other trauma.'

Paltrow's rep denies Madonna row

Gwyneth Paltrow has reportedly not ended her close friendship with Madonna.
The Iron Man 2 star's representative has dismissed a report claiming that Paltrow and Madonna have cut ties following a major row.
A source recently told Us Weekly that their friendship has been deteriorating since the popstar split from Guy Ritchie in 2008 and they now have no contact at all.
However, Paltrow's rep told Gossip Cop that the rumour is false.
'[It's] not true. [They are] still friends,' said the spokesperson.
A rep for Madonna also dismissed the report as 'BS'.

Gaga's Alejandro Video: A Guide To Its Madonna References

MTV.com writer Kyle Anderson has highlighted the Madonna references featured in the Steven Klein directed video for Lady Gaga's Alejandro:

When the brief preview for Lady Gaga's 'Alejandro' video appeared during the singer's appearance on 'Larry King Live' last week, many people immediately noticed the nod to Madonna's 'Vogue.' It was all there: the sharp black-and-white photography, the muscular dancing, the spartan set, the iconic hairstyle.
But as it turns out, the full version of 'Alejandro' - which premiered Tuesday (June 8) - is a healthy combination of a number of different references, nods and homages to a bevy of Madonna videos. (One MTV News writer says 'Alejandro' is more than just an ode to Madonna - check out his counterpoint in the Newsroom blog.)
The 'Vogue' references are certainly there, as Gaga spends a large chunk of the video in that same spartan set in black-and-white. But the rest of the clip features Gaga in a number of different costumes - including a red nun's habit and some sort of steampunk headgear - in a handful of different scenarios (some of which involve Nazi imagery).
In addition to 'Vogue,' the opening sequence seems to recall Madonna's 'Evita' period (when she made 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina' a hit). Gaga is dressed to mourn whomever is in the casket behind her - perhaps the titular Alejandro? - and it would be easy to assume that she's attending a state funeral, which would mean Gaga flipped the gender roles in the original story of the Peróns (in reality, it was Juan who buried Eva).
Later, Gaga strips to her underwear and dominates a scantily clad dancer tied to a bed. While Madonna is no stranger to the imagery surrounding bondage and submission, that image most faithfully recalls the Material Girl's 'Human Nature,' which saw her dressed in black pleather and dancing seductively with the assistance of ropes and a riding crop.
But the biggest nod to Madonna's past certainly comes with all the religious imagery. Gaga dresses as a nun, swallows rosary beads and stands in front of a row of crosses at various points during the clip, which brings to mind Madonna's classic video for 'Like a Prayer.' In fact, there are even video clips of flames in the background of one of the dance scenes in 'Alejandro,' which could easily have been lifted wholesale from the moment in Madonna's clip when she sings among a field of flaming crosses.
There are a number of other cultural references that slip out of 'Alejandro' (Gaga clearly enjoys the work of film director Fritz Lang), but even the gun-barrel-sporting bra she wears at the end could be mistaken for that conical top Madonna made famous during the Blonde Ambition Tour.
Of course, 'Alejandro' director Steven Klein has worked as a photographer for Madonna over the past few years, so it's quite possible that these are merely the influences he has picked up while working with her. But if Gaga really is making an attempt to define herself as a next-gen Madonna who also pays homage to her elders, then there are worse paths to follow.

Guetta: 'I was unlucky with Madonna'

David Guetta has suggested that record label issues may prevent the release of his collaboration with Madonna.
The DJ and producer confirmed to The Guardian that he and Madonna recently wrote and recorded a track together.
Guetta said: 'It's a tricky situation, because she's now out of a record deal. We don't even know what's going to happen with it. It's a huge record, so it's really frustrating.'
'The track is part of the Warner deal, but it's not on the album, so why would they invest any money in it? I was really unlucky with that one.'
