Furnish spoke out following Madonna's victory in the 'Best Original Song' category, which saw her track 'Masterpiece' triumph over 'Hello Hello' by his husband Sir Elton John.
The 49-year-old, who also described the W.E. director as 'embarrassing' and 'desperate', went on to advise Madonna to 'stick to what she's good at' following the release of her new movie.
However, Furnish has now responded to the widespread reaction to his comments, insisting that his criticism was born out of 'passion' for John's nominated song.
'Wow! What a tempest in a teapot. My comments regarding The Golden Globes have been blown way out of proportion,' he wrote on his Facebook page. 'My passion for our film Gnomeo & Juliet and belief in Elton's song really got my emotional juices going.'
He added: 'But I must say for the record that I do believe Madonna is a great artist, and that Elton and I wish her all the best for next week's premiere of the film W.E.'

I'm glad to see people defend Madonna. It was shocking to see such vile behavior from the John Furnishes. Liz Smith's comments explained everything perfectly - they are ridiculous. David is an aging gold digger, tacky, obnoxious, ugly...Elton needs to look in the mirror - clearly jealous.
We all can learn from Madonna about how to deal with situations like this, with grace, dignity, respect and a little humor, all reasons why we love her so much!

Things "blown way out of proportion" my a$&! Absolutely not. They need to deal with the consequences of their actions. People have reacted and expressed themselves the same way you did. Now deal with it!

exactly but waking up next to Elton everyday i would be bitter and dropping f words more often than not, they showed themselves up royally, jealousy is never attractive, and very immature, Madonna deserved that win, deal with it ~Decx.

Okay, let me see if I've got my facts straight on these two:
1) First Elton declares at the Golden Globes red carpet that Madge's "Masterpiece" doesn't stand an "f'ing" chance at winning.
2) Masterpiece wins Best Song and we then see a disgusted Elton watching Madge give her acceptance speech.
3) David hits the social networking sites and drops more "F-Bombs" on Madonna for winning over Elton.
4) Madonna had nothing but kind words about Elton in the "press room" and stated that Elton has been known to act like this towards her followed by not speaking with her for years.
Yup, that's about how things have gone down until now. Now Elton & David are surprised by the heat they're tacking for acting like idiots? I say drop some "F-Bombs" on them and keep throwing them the sh*t they deserve.

Blown out of proportion is exactly the right term. Perhaps Mrs Elton John should not have posted his feelings on social media!
